It is the improper application of those principle wherein lies the danger. What we are doing with Red China, IMHO, has nothing to do with the Free Market or the principles upon which it is based. Therein lies the rub.

I was going to reply to your above comment with very similar thoughts. You expressed it much better than I would have.
I think you'd agree that applying these universal ideas properly would include defending the sovereignty and the political and economic power that lets the Anglosphere work to spread them elsewhere.
