The Rove Factor? Time magazine talked to Bush's guru for Plame story.
By Michael Isikoff Newsweek July 11 issue - Its legal appeals exhausted, Time magazine agreed last week to turn over reporter Matthew Cooper's e-mails and computer notes to a special prosecutor investigating the leak of an undercover CIA agent's identity. The case has been the subject of press controversy for two years. Saying "we are not above the law," Time Inc. Editor in Chief Norman Pearlstine decided to comply with a grand-jury subpoena to turn over documents related to the leak. But Cooper (and a New York Times reporter, Judith Miller) is still refusing to testify and faces jail this week.
At issue is the story of a CIA-sponsored trip taken by former ambassador (and White House critic) Joseph Wilson to investigate reports that Iraq was seeking to buy uranium from the African country of Niger. "Some government officials have noted to Time in interviews... that Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, is a CIA official who monitors the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," said Cooper's July 2003 Time online article.
Now the story may be about to take another turn. The e-mails surrendered by Time Inc., which are largely between Cooper and his editors, show that one of Cooper's sources was White House deputy chief of staff Karl Rove, according to two lawyers who asked not to be identified because they are representing witnesses sympathetic to the White House. Cooper and a Time spokeswoman declined to comment. But in an interview with NEWSWEEK, Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, confirmed that Rove had been interviewed by Cooper for the article. It is unclear, however, what passed between Cooper and Rove.

Time released documents about Collins' sources, after it was ordered to by a federal court, and after spending a lot of time and incurring a lot of legal fees fighting that ruling. Once finally released, those records included a mention of Rove's name. You're bending over backward to make that somehow a sinister conspiracy on Time's part.
The most we know is that a source told Collins about Plame, and that Rove was one of Collins' sources. A lot of folks on the left are trying to craft a smoking gun out of that, and based on what I've seen so far, it ain't there. Collins is still refusing to testify about confidential sources, and could still face jail time for it.
Uh, yeah. When did I ever mention NEWSWEEK?
You didn't. And I find that curious, because this thread is based on a Newsweek article. And, as far as I know, Newsweek is the only source we have for what's in the papers released by Time. Have you seen all the original Time documents for yourself? I haven't.
keeping sources confidential didn't start with the Plame story, and since we're not even talking about NEWSWEEK, but a TIME story, what the hell are you even bringing NEWSWEEK into it for, anyway?
We're talking about a Time story? Really? Please direct me to Time's story about the contents of the documents it handed over to the grand jury. Because I must have missed it. And I'd be surprised if, after going to that much effort to avoid turning over the documents, they'd then publish them.
The alpha post in this thread was based on a Newsweek analyst's reading of the Time documents (posted on MSNBC, which has had some sort of partnership with Newsweek for a number of years). I have not seen another source for that information. I hate to introduce inconvenient facts, but we are in fact talking about a Newsweek story about Time, not a Time story.
That was a really nice try, but you dance your way out of your error. If you can't see the pertinence of my talking about TIME in relation to a story ABOUT SOMETHING TIME DID, I can't help you.
I did no such thing, but I can understand you trying to invent positions for me, since you must have realized by now how foolish your previous post looks in context; criticizing me for talking about TIME in a thread about TIME is kinda pointless, no? Don't answer, based on your previous posts, I don't want you to hurt yourself twisting again.
Let's simplify.
Source of documents handed over to the grand jury: Time.
Source of all available information about the content of those documents: Newsweek.
If either of those assertions is false, feel free to show me up.
After the false Koran story, I was driving by the Newsweek bulding one night about 12. The lights were out in front and a huge pile of trash on the sidewlak. The picture was priceless had I had a camera. Told the story of that week well.
"...according to two lawyers who asked not to be identified because they are representing witnesses sympathetic to the White House."
WOW.....ONCE AGAIN....THEY RUN WITH NOTHING AT NEWSWEEK.
Looks like the Bogus Gitmo story, part 2. (The media has not changed a bit since Vietnam)
A) Unnamed sources.
B) Two lawyers who are representing witnesses would not risk their careers with anything other than what has been put out there...THAT BEING THAT ROVE TALKED TO REPORTERS...But NO evidence that he leaked Plame's name.
C) NOTHING IN THE ARTICLE SHOWS THAT ROVE LEAKED PLAME'S NAME TO ANYBODY...OR THAT HE EVEN KNEW HER NAME.
"Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, said prosecutors have assured Rove he is not a target of the criminal investigation."
From the article you posted.
Wow...there are actually some at DUmmy land that realize that the article in no way show that Rove leaked, or even knew, Plame's name.
The rest have gone to loon land.
READ THE ARTICLE.
There is nothing there to show that he leaked or even knew Plame's identity.
Wow.....O'Donnell got it wrong big time.
Newsweek.....did not go that line.
They tried to toss stuff out there....but even they know they had nothing that shows Rove leaked a name.
FURTHERMORE.....It was already known that Rove talked to those folks....about a different issue.

JOE WILSON'S secret diary; entries Feb. 17 - 25, 2003
Monday, Feb. 17
my biggest worry - when was I last immunized for yellow fever?...hectic cab ride to the airport...grabbed a latte on the way at the Starbucks where Caity Mahoney was murdered...awwww, she didn't get her chance to talk to Ken Starr...damn Republicans...caught United flight to Paris.....caught Al Algerie and landed in Niamey...20 hours and a lot of smelly people....man, I better find a way to get a book deal out of this
Tues, Feb. 18
fourth floor suite at the Gawaeye is okay...jet lag hitting hard...sat by the pool sipping sweet mint tea most of the day...asked a bellhop if he knew anything about Iraq buying yellow cake...he didn't
Wed., Feb. 19
spent about three hours sipping sweet ming tea...watched some CNN...I don't know whether to thank or blame Valerie for getting me this gig...if she ever finds out about the student who came in on my flight from Paris, she will hang me by my nads...asked Bridgette if she knew anything about Iraq buying yellow cake...she didn't
Thurs, Feb. 20
had a traditional Niger breakfast and stomach felt queasy most of the day...met with a few government officials...we sipped sweet mint tea...can't remember their names...asked if they knew about Iraq buying yellow cake...they didn't
Fri, Feb. 21
went to the Niamey Grand Market to do some shopping...asked the cabbie on the way if he knew anything about Iraq and yellow cake...he didn't...had a leisurely lunch and sipped sweet mint tea for about an hour and a half...asked 10 shop keepers if they knew about Iraq buying yellow cake...nine of them knew nothing...one guy heard some kind of a rumor from his brother-in-law in Chad but didn't trust him, particulary after his honor killing of their niece ...bought Valerie an authentic Djenne-Djeno copper alloy bead necklace...got one for Bridgette, along with a copy of Leaves of Grass in French...put it all on expense account...thank you, taxpaying suckers...watched a little CNN and a porno tape I brought with me
Saturday, Feb. 22
it was a tough week, so I thought I deserved some R&R...went to see camel races...asked three camel jockeys if they knew whether Iraq had bought yellow cake...they didn't...the races were fun, but the sweet mint tea had me jumping up to go to the bathroom too often...ha, ha, kind of like Al Gore was not in the room because he drank too much iced tea and had to go pee...took Bridgette out for some dinner and entertainment...we had a fairly decent meal of rice and sauce, couscous, kebabs, grilled fish and chicken...then went to the Jet-7 and drank a few too many beers
Sunday, Feb. 23
slept in late...this stinking place has no decent Sunday brunch in the whole damned country...had a continental breakfast -- orange juice, coconut milk, stale pastry of some kind...sat by the pool most of the day drinking sweet mint tea...in the evening, I went by a mosque and asked some kids outside if they knew anything about yellow cake...then ran away...I think they were scared and thought I might have been out gay cruising...maybe I'm lucky I didn't get beaten up like Kevin Spacey when he was out cruising in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park in London
Monday, Feb. 24
last day here...in good faith, I really wanted to do my job and find out about this yellow cake stuff...a police officer knew nothing, a librarian knew nothing, three tribal leaders knew nothing, a high-ranking military officer knew nothing, a peddler knew nothing, a guy I met in a public restroom knew nothing...spent another few hours by the pool to get in my last several cups of sweet mint tea
Tuesday, Feb. 25
another 20 stinking hours from Niamey to Paris to D.C....if this religious warrior and cowboy thinks he is going to get away with claiming Iraq was a threat, I have all the info I need to nail him...hell, he was never elected in the first place...I wonder if it will be Howard Dean or Hillary who gets the nomination...if I were Howard, I would worry that Hillary might whack me...whoever gets the nod, if they win, I had better get a good job...but I'm not going back to Niger...give me Paris
"...He did say that Rove himself had testified before the grand jury "two or three times" and signed a waiver authorizing reporters to testify about their conversations with him. "
jveritas is right. Newsweek has defeated themself here.
ROVE SIGNED A WAIVER SO THAT REPORTER COULD TALK ABOUT CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM.
TIME and the others HAVE NOT GIVEN ANYTHING THAT SHOWS IT WAS ROVE!
Reporters are risking Jail Time. They would not even think about that if it was Rove....SINCE HE GAVE THEM LEGAL PERMISSION TO STATE WHAT ROVE TALKED TO THEM ABOUT.
The Newsweek story is another attempted hit piece.....by people who are soooooo stupid....
THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THE SIMPLE LOGIC TO NOTICE THAT THEIR OWN STORY SHOWS THAT IT IS NOT ROVE!
No smoking gun at all.
Looks like the media will try any hit story they can..
MOST LIKELY...to cause trouble while Supreme Court vacancies are open.
Guess they think they can affect the picks ...if there is any type of heat thrown at the White House.
Yes, but he pretty much gets a free pass on it. Did you notice how all the Gitmo stories were coordinated among all the usual suspects on the left -- the UN, Carter, Clinton, the Washington Post, Newsweek, France, etc?
Yup...very well co-ordinated..
Why is Michael Isikoff writing tis story and not Cooper himself?
BTW .. was she part of the CIA that gave the Pesident reports about WMD .. that are now claimed to have not been there?
