The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby

That passage makes me want to pick up a copy and read it again. Many years ago, I was listening to some other design majors earnestly discussing how art students were superior to all other forms of life, when one particularly artsy-fartsy jerk went off on a tirade about how wrong this Tom Wolfe guy was; I started reading and began marveling about how RIGHT this Tom Wolfe guy was!

"From Bauhaus to Our House" is one of my favorite short Wolfe works, in addition to his scathingly satirical critique of abstract expressionism-and its the even less aesthetically pleasing successor movements known as conceptualism and minimalism-The Painted Word.

Now that he's become an acclaimed novelist people seem to have forgotten that he was the pioneer-and aside from Joan Didion, probably the only halfway readable practitioner of this craft-of New Journalism.

Some of his best work was done as a young tabloid journalist/essayist.
