COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - An 8-year-old girl who disappeared with her brother six weeks ago from a home where family members were bludgeoned to death was spotted early Saturday with a registered sex offender at a Denny's restaurant, officials said. ADVERTISEMENT
The girl's 9-year-old brother, Dylan, had not been found, Kootenai County Sheriff's Capt. Ben Wolfinger said. He said the girl was spotted in her hometown by a waitress who apparently recognized her from photographs displayed in the media.
Joseph Edward Duncan III, of from Fargo, N.D., was arrested without incident and charged with kidnapping, Wolfinger said. Duncan was being held without bond.
Shasta seemed well, and was being interviewed by investigators.
"She was sitting in a restaurant eating a meal. She's obviously well enough to do that," Wolfinger said.
Duncan had an outstanding warrant for failing to register as a sex offender and had a history of rape, Wolfinger said. He was facing charges of molesting a 6-year-old boy in Minnesota last year but was released on bail in April.
It is not known whether Duncan had a connection with the family. Wolfinger said he had no information on where Shasta had been held or where her brother may be.
"All we know is that he was not with Shasta and Duncan" at the restaurant, he said.
Dylan and Shasta Groene had been missing since at least May 16, when sheriff's deputies responded to their rural home after a neighbor reported that dogs were barking and the door of one vehicle was open but no one was in sight.
The deputies found the bound bodies of Brenda Groene, 40, Slade Groene, 13, and Mark McKenzie, 37. The victims were bound and then bludgeoned to death.
FBI agents and local officers interviewed hundreds of people, searched through 800 tons of animal carcasses and other trash and devoted thousands of hours to the search.
More than 2,000 tips flowed in, with people offering theories that ranged from alien abduction to a motorcycle gang war, since the children's biological father, Steven Groene, owns a Harley-Davidson.
Brenda Groene and Mark McKenzie had marijuana and methamphetamine in their bodies at the time of their deaths, according to autopsies.
Duncan had been charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct and attempted criminal sexual conduct in Minnesota for allegedly molesting a 6-year-old boy at a school playground last July.
He had been released by Becker County, Minn., authorities in April on $15,000 bond and ordered to stay in touch with a probation agent. In May, authorities said they were seeking Duncan on a warrant after he failed to do so.
Duncan was convicted of raping a 14-year-old boy in Washington state in 1980, when he was 16.
This duncan guy is a sicko. He definitely did it, just look at his blog.

"I wish I could be more honest about my feelings, but those demons made sure I'd never be able to do that. I might not know if it matters, but just in case, I am working on an encrypted journal that is hundreds of times more frank than this blog could ever be (that's why I keep it encrypted). I figure in 30 years or more we will have the technology to easily crack the encryption (currently very un-crackable, PGP) and then the world will know who I really was, and what I really did, and what I really thought. Also, maybe then they will understand that despite my actions, I'm not a bad person, I just have a disease contracted from society, and it hurts a lot.
I hope to complete this journal before I die (soon) or turn myself in (I still might do that, I think it is the right thing, but of course, I'm not sure).
"
" My intent is to harm society as much as I can, then die. "
Something about even reading his words, make my stomach just twist, and my "fight or flight" adrenaline kick in...
very uncomfortable feeling, I have to say....
And how did you know he had a blog? It was never mentioned in the article.
Interesting how:
1. He's such a sociopath. Everything is about him and his feelings. The feelings of the children he destroyed do not matter.
2. He blames everyone but himself. His family, society, prison, "demons". Lots of talk about demons.
3. He wants to change, but he doesn't want to take responsiblity for his own actions.
Apparently lots of people know. They are already posting comments on it.
Had Minnesota helped him by stopping the former and assisting him in the latter of these objectives, he would not be where he is today.
It is time to quit playing "catch and release" with these sick ba$tards.
Sample quote from the Pedo's blog:
"If you think I'm a leftist bleeding heart liberal, then what would you have called Jesus? (Who was publicly executed for a "serious crime" in his day.)"
Thank you God, and please heal this child.
None of this had to happen. Here is my solution:
1. Death Penalty for all sex offenders.
2. Death Penalty for all registered sex offenders.
Let these people die. If they don't kill on their first attack, they will on their second to prevent witnesses. It has been shown time and time again that they will attack again. Forget this "second chance" bullshit. Protect the innocent and defend the victims.
Hey Tx,
Creepy right? I heard on Fox they found the brother also...anyone else hear that?
I am thinking those demons he spoke of were not far from his own mind and heart.
Where?
That Link is simply unbelievable (and then not really) - They need to put him in the ground - plain and simple -
Out here we had them put away for life until recently. Last year my husband and I had to fight hard to keep them from being placed in a neighborhood just a few miles from our home.
A homegrown sicko ping.
This link to the blog is your ONLY post. I repeat, how did you know he had a blog?
It was reported on Fox that they had found him, but that has since been removed. They're still looking for the little boy, so let's keep the prayers up.
