I dunno. All he needed to do was hold one of the kids hostage, say, a knife to the throat, and I suspect the family would let themselves be tied up, or tie each other up on the orders of the guy. Once they were tied up, he could do anything to them.

Never rule out the power and cunning of pure evil.
