This may have been the President's plan all along. Have the GOP moderates get this deal with the Dems, approve the judges and then select one of them for the SC. Brilliant strategery!!
If Bush nominates someone only to avoid a fight... Republicans will suffer at the polls in 2006 and 2008. He's extended his hand numerous times to only have it bitten. NOW is the time to return sanity to the SCOTUS!

But on your other point, Reid knows that he will eventually lose. If he blocks the SCOTUS replacement for O'Connor, the Republicans will use the constitutional option. Then he can hardly lift a finger to stop Rehnquist's replacement.
I think he will save his fight for when either Ginsburg or Stevens retire or die in office. Because if Bush nominates replacements for these justices, then the balance of power will REALLY shift.
