TAKING BACK THE SCHOOLS (Teachers thought girl's punishment was too harsh and dangerous)
This is True ^ | 26 June 2005 Current Issue | Randy Cassingham

Posted on 07/02/2005 6:33:40 AM PDT by fight_truth_decay

Principal Dan Doerhoff of East Lynne School in Kansas City, Mo., decided a fitting punishment for an unnamed fourth- grade girl in lieu of suspension was to make her pick up rocks along the road in front of the school for three days. Alone. Teachers thought the girl's punishment was too harsh and dangerous, and during their free periods several went out to help her and watch after her. The mini revolt was led by teacher Christa Price, so Doerhoff not only ordered Price fired for "failing to support the administration," he refused to do the final sign-off on her teaching credential, which she needs to get another teaching job. Seven other teachers quit to show support for Price, leaving only two teachers at the school. Parents are fighting back too: they gathered 177 signatures on a petition demanding Doerhoff's resignation, and are campaigning to vote out any school board members who support him. Meanwhile, district officials say they'll sign Price's certificate so she can get a new job. (Kansas City Star) ...No matter how old you get, it can still be satisfying to say "nyah nyah nyah" to the principal.

Doerhoff is simply a very, very small man probably now looking for a way to achieve victim status.

There seem to be a few parents willing to help him achieve that status.

Schools and school districts, in fact the whole education apparatus, would be just fine if it weren't for those pesky students. They use up time and money that could better be used on salaries and new buildings. In addition you have to spend all that time teaching them and then they go and flunk the tests and make everybody look bad. There is nothing wrong with our schools that couldn't be fixed by outlawing students.

One thing that I have not seen in this thread is that child endangerment is a criminal, not a civil matter. The police/Child protective services should investigate the incident.

Either way the bubba is toast and will be gone when his contract is over at the latest. No administrator can take this kind of heat and survive. Every decision he makes from now on will be questioned and examined for fault or bias. Right or wrong he will have no effectivity.

We wouldn't have too many politicians around then. And that would be bad how?

I said it in a joking manner. I never said it would be bad. Sorry, I agree with you there.

When I went to fourth grade the teacher would cuff you and embarass you in front of your classmates...then your parents would be called to handle your insubordinate little azz.

There were a lot of things done in the old days that people would scream to sue for now.

Yes. The teacher is undermining authority. Since when does a single individual have the right to have their way only? Answer, when you are a despot.

OMG...please stay up in Massachusettes.

My thoughts exactly.... about the rogue principal.

The teacher volunteered her time, HER OWN TIME, in the way she saw fit.

It would be no different from a policeman paying someone else's speeding ticket.

He does not undermine anyone's authority. He simply commits a good deed that was in his heart.

Ever thought of becoming a Pharisee?

You mean it is not true in your school district?

Can't have a child do physical labor, no, not in a country where obesity is rampant. Past history on the little girl's behavior? Only one side here. Parents responsibility for getting her to do the homework? No, they're bashed for letting her pick up rocks in lieu of expulsion.

I always try to have consequences related to the infraction. It makes more sense that way. If the girl had been throwing rocks, having her gather rocks would make sense. What is baffling here is that neither the teacher NOR the parents were able to get the child to do homework (so that the Principal became involved)?? How lame are they? She's just a fourth grader.

Perhaps the parents and teacher had tried all the regular stuff for homework problems, and the Principal was trying for something shocking and embarrasing. But I doubt it. Sadly, all the ineffectual adults around her will do the child more harm than picking up rocks.

I was doing a bunch of threads so I must ask to what you were referring. However, if it is teachers not having to belong to the union. Yes, it is true in my district AND my state.

I would bet a security camera would give a better report to the police than a diminutive female teacher who possibly tried to defend the hapless girl and got knocked senseless by a burley sex predator.

You're missing the point. Why risk putting that child in such a dangerous situation in the first place? By the time you get a detailed description of the "burly sex predator" - whether you get that description from a "diminutive female teacher", or by reviewing the video from the security camera - it's already too late.

Maybe the child did misbehave, and should have been disciplined. Are you going to tell me that this is the only possible punishment that could have been administered in this situation? We're talking about a little girl in the fourth grade, not some hardened criminal.

There is something sadistic about a principal would would subject this little girl to that type of punishment.
