It does seem that there are a large number of major quakes, but if you consider that every single day there are at least a hundred quakes over magnitude 2.5 occurring all over the world, then it's easier to put it into perspective.

For example when I checked yesterday there were 146 quakes over 2.5 magnitude. Today it's 155 quakes over 2.5 magnitude.

I check the same map several times a day. I don't think that there are that many earthquakes each day. The red squares indicate activity in the past hour, the orange indicate activity in the past day, the yellow indicates activity in the past week. I certainly could be wrong, but that is my understanding of the map.
