Who is this award named for? Judge Elihu Smails, the character in the film Caddyshack who asks of the obnoxious but lovable Al Czervick (played by Rodney Dangerfield), Good Lord, what has this buffoon done now?
As a special tribute to Judge Smails, every week we will issue this award to the biggest buffoon of the week
the person who, through his or her actions or public statements, has made a buffoon of themselves and everyone associated with them. Please note that since we slammed John "Crushed" Kerry on a daily basis when the site name was "crushkerry", he and his family are ineligible for this prestigious award. We also ask Ankle Biters to send in your nominations (no limits, so keep them coming). All we ask is that you tell us why youre nominating the person, and include a link to any relevant stories.
Last night I was all set to bestow the Honorable Elihue Smails Award on Jimmy Carter, but not for anything he did this week, however. You see, the election of alleged hostage-taker Mahmood Ahmadinejad to the presidency of Iran brought back a bone-chilling reminder of the wages of Carters appeasement. So I figured now would be a good time as any to give Carter the award for being gutless and slow-witted in the late-1970s. But as I thought more and more about it I realized Jimmy Carters ineptitude actually adds value to the current national security debate. As long as we have the bungling, cantankerous old peanut farmer to point to and ask, why would we even go back? conservatives will maintain a leg up in the whole War on Terror thing.
So I was at a loss
no clue upon whom to bestow the coveted Smails Award for being the biggest buffoon of the week. And then, as if in answer to my prayers (facing east, five times a day) Brian Williams -- or is his full name NBC's Brian Williams? -- goes on national television and compares George Washington to an Islamic terrorist. I thought to myself, surely the one true God (peace be upon him) smiles upon me. I am His minstrel.
Confession: I didnt actually see NBC's Brian Williams compare our nations Founders to Islamic terrorists -- dont get around to watching NBC News much (eye roll), so Im working from blogs. Nonetheless, he said what he said, and I dont need to see it to know it was worthy of a Smails. Heres what Williams wrote on his MSNBC blog:
The White House and most official branches of government are ducking any substantive comment on this story, and photo analysis is going on at this and other news organizations. It is a story that will be at or near the top of our broadcast and certainly made for a robust debate in our afternoon editorial meeting, when several of us raised the point (I'll leave it to others to decide germaneness) that several U.S. presidents were at minimum revolutionaries, and probably were considered terrorists of their time by the Crown in England.
Then, later last night on television, Williams said to Andrea Mitchell:
"What would it all matter if proven true? Someone brought up today the first several U.S. presidents were certainly revolutionaries and might have been called 'terrorists' by the British crown, after all."
I dont know who this someone was, but earlier Brian insisted it was him and several of us.
Lets be clear about one thing. Insofar as the Founders being rebels to the Royal Crown, NBC's Brian Williams is right. It is true that had the Brits won that little dance contest, George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson (maybe not so much; a bit of a coward during the war) and other folks we associate with the founding of this country would have been hanged publicly and hated by posterity.
But this brings us to the germaneness of NBC's Brian Williams argument, which he so politely leaves to our discretion. And here it is: Its not germane at all! In fact, its totally irrelevant and stupid. Thats right, stupid. In addition to being a typical Americans are no better than anyone else media liberal, Williams is a dumb-dumb.
For one, we declared our independence against England and we were fighting a declared war on our soil!
Two, though the American Revolution was not the polite affair often depicted in storybooks, there was no widespread terror in the sense of taking innocent hostages and killing women and children.
Three, the Founders were statesmen driven to (essentially a civil) war by the cruelty (and, frankly, the Jimmy Carter-like ineptitude) of Parliament and the Crown; the rise of Middle Eastern terrorist-politicians has happened in reverse order, meaning instead of gentlemen taking to the battlefield, thugs are taking over the levers of legitimate power.
Four, the Founders had legitimate gripes against England, for which they repeatedly sought satisfaction; the chief gripe of the Islamic terrorists is that the Jews run America, which, by the way, is the Great Satan.
And five, NBC'S BRIAN WILLIAMS COMPARED GEORGE WASHINGTON TO ISLAMIC TERRORISTS!!!!
One last note about NBC's Brian Williams screwy analogy. He picked a really bad day to pull this boneheaded stunt. Whether or not Mahmood Ahmadinejad was a hostage taker may not even be the issue. Thats because Mahmood yesterday called on Islamic revolutionaries to take the show on the road:
Iran's president-elect has proclaimed an Islamic revolution of global proportions.
Mahmood Ahmadinejad said his election coincided with what he termed a new Islamic revolution.
"The wave of the Islamic revolution will soon reach the entire world," Ahmadinejad said. "In one night, the martyrs strode down a path of 100 years."
Ahmadinejad, who did not elaborate, was speaking to the families of those killed in a 1981 attack at the headquarters of the Islamic Republic Party, Middle East Newsline reported.

She's been all over this story -- her comments are here: BRIAN WILLIAMS SAID WHAT?
Williams should refrain from repeating things he hears at Liberal cocktail parties on the air.
Idiot.
He should stick to topics he knows about -- hair gel, blow dryers, whatever.
Never forget that Brian Williams was a White House Fellow in Jimmy Carter's White House. Which may very well mean(I'm giving him a bit of a break here) that he is a whining, liberal maggot.
Brian Williams of NBC news just compared the new Iranian President to the Founding Fathers
Sam's Army, the next Buckhead?
