Jack Valenti, the popular former LBJ aide who served for years as chief lobbyist for the Motion Picture Assn., told CNN Friday afternoon that President Bush must name a clone (not his words)of Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court to succeed Mrs. Justice O'Connor. Valenti hailed O'Connor for being able to "bridge" left and right on "these social issues." He did not say that O'Connor's bridge was usually to one side, the left one! His sparring partner, venerable Robert D.S. Novak said Bush must name a real conservative to the vacancy.
