Yeah... it was Lt. 'Rip' Masters. The sergeants name was 'Biff' O'Hara. I believe he was one of 'Duke Mantee's' thugs in 'Petrified Forest'.

Well, it's refreshing to hear some folks praising an old mans remembrances. Mr. Brennan is 6 years older than me and I remember most of what he said. I never knew my paternal GGfather. He was killed in a train wreck somewhere in Illinois in the 1870's. His son served in the army in WWI in France. My maternal GGfather was the first man to survive a trip through the Grand Canyon (albeit accidently) in 1867, and then was a stagecoach driver in Kansas and Colorado.

Usually, we old gummers are relegated to the rear of the bus and little interest is given to our warnings and admonitions.

There is one thing that I can say for sure. This country is sliding downhill at a speed I never thought possible. Unless there is a new awakening of patriotic, nationalistic fervor soon America is finished as we knew it. Political correctness is a farce perpetrated upon us by those that wish to benefit for themselves. The educational system is a joke. Politicians are a bigger joke.

I hope you younger folks can fix things before it's too late.

Lt. Rip Masters,(James Brown) was in quite a few of John Fords movies, not as often as Harry Carey or Ward Bond but still one of Ford's regulars.

After 1965, America began its downward spiral

I was born in 64, so now I can be certain that it wasn't my fault.

"No zot for you! Slert may become a new word in the FR lexicon, though! ;)"

I'm laughing so hard that I'm falling off of my chair, and tears are rolling down my face. All of you are so funny..........and so generous about my STOOPIT typo: SLERT, indeed! What a magnificent slip of one finger. We can start up a whole new practice of "SLERTING" people with whom we strongly disagree!

SLERTING should be an activity similar to dumping the residual contents of a large syrofoam cooler over someone's head, as is customary for winning Super Bowl coaches. There is a coldish, liquid, sqwooshy feeling about the act of SLERTING.

C'mon, gang. Let's get down to business and figure out where SLERT belongs..........does it belong above, below or equal with ZOT? I'm hereby formally announcing that I'm in favor of starting up an FR SLERTING movement!

I report. You decide!

Cheerio!

Char :).......faithfully slerting forward into an uncertain new world of condemnatory linguistics!

Henceforth, I shall put SLERT ALERT on my taglines for MAJOR BREAKING BUMPABLE NEWS!

Thanks to one very gracious and kind FR Moderator on Duty, the "stoopit" typo was quickly fixed. However, I still maintain that it's one of the funniest new words I've ever seen - done by total human error, and which I intend now to turn into a bonanza of future verbiage usages!

How's that, nothingnew? (Everytime I retype my new word, SLERT, I burst out laughing!)

Char :)

My grandmother died several years ago at the age of 103. She distinctly remembered our relatives leaving home to fight in the Spanish American War. Her father fought in the War of Northern Aggression.

I just got in from bush hogging on a tractor for 13 solid hours. I feel old enough to have been the "road guide" for the Three Wise Men. But I am only a young whipper snapper of 61.

"my aunt Day was born in the year that George Armstrong Custer was killed at the Little Big Horn and I'm old enough to have known an old soldier who had served with men who had served at one time or another with Custer."
Now there was a rotten Yankee bastard of the first degree ....
George 'murderer of the Shenandoah' Custer. The Sioux did history a big favor . Too bad so many other guys had to go down with him. My brother has got a 7thCav saber , one that they left on the field elsewhere so they could ride faster to their deaths ....
