Crunch these numbers:
The Irving plant employs 640 workers and is open almost 'round the clock. On average, 600,000 pounds of raw materials are processed per eight-hour shift. A shipment of 46,000 pounds of raw potatoes lasts only 2 ½ hours.
In the United States alone, 55 million Lay's potato chips are produced each hour. That's 13 million bags a day about 3.4 billion bags a year. (And that doesn't even include the other well-known favorites, such as Doritos, Fritos, Cheetos and Tostitos.)
