LAUSD Schools Win Large State Grant Wednesday June 29, 6:06 pm ET Nearly $6 Million for Technology Awarded to 9 Middle Schools

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 29, 2005--The California Department of Education announced this week that the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was the top Los Angeles County winner among dozens of local school districts during the latest round of the competitive Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant program. The winning grant will provide nearly 6 million dollars as well as in-kind donations and partner discounts benefiting 9 LAUSD middle schools and approximately 20,000 students. Glendale Unified was the other LA County grant winner with a $1M award.

LAUSD middle schools participating in the grant project are: Berendo, El Sereno, Gage, Gompers, Mann, Mulholland, Northridge, Peary and Sutter.

The LAUSD grant application, written and coordinated by Tech Ed Services, Inc., was made possible through the Enhancing Education Through Technology program as part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The winning LAUSD proposal, entitled Integrating Mathematics and Science through Technology (IMaST), will provide funds for wireless laptop computers, interactive technologies, simulations and collaborative communications tools for teachers and students and is focused on integrating technology to actively engage students in achieving content standards. The LAUSD grant also funds professional development for an estimated 200 teachers as well as support for 36 coach mentors throughout the participating schools in a partnership with the Los Angeles County Office of Education CTAP Region 11.

"In developing this grant application, LAUSD involved various groups including administrators, teachers, curriculum and technology specialists, grant partners and parents," noted Dr. Themy Sparangis, Chief Technology Director, Educational Technology, for the district. "Our grant project's goal is for students to advance their Algebra skills while building their science knowledge to better prepare them for transition to high school and college entrance, and thus give them the essential skills and the opportunity to enter technology-based science and mathematics careers of the 21st century," added Sparangis.

"Tech Ed Services was a driving force behind our EETT grant which ensured a common vision and joint action plan to leverage and maximize district and partner resources as a collaborative of our multiple stakeholders. Tech Ed's commitment, along with that of our other partners, will help ensure success for all of our students and staff," said Sparangis.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (www.lausd.net) is the second largest school district in the U.S., enrolling more than 737,000 students. Under Superintendent Roy Romer, the district has embarked on comprehensive system-wide reform emphasizing unified approaches to standards-based instruction, professional development, coaching and collaboration and periodic assessments. The nine participating middle schools reflect diversity in school demographics, area and size, poverty level and students needs, with almost 81% of the target students eligible for free/reduced lunch.

Established in 1993, Tech Ed Services, Inc. (www.techedservices.com), a minority-owned California corporation headquartered in Downey, California, is a leading provider of outsourced technology support services to the K-12 education market. Recognized for its technology plans documents, nearly $70 million in successfully-funded technology grants, on-site technical support, and its training programs for teachers, technology coach mentors and parents, Tech Ed Services, Inc. currently serves thousands of educators in over 100 school districts, regional consortiums, and county offices of education.

If it's possible could you please add (Six Million Dollars from the Feds) to the title?

Thank you very much.

Oops, I forgot the janitors. Well sure, since it's all free money, there's six million dollars on its way from the Feds, might as well equip the janitors with wireless laptop computers, too.

There's plenty to go around and best, it's free money.

Uhhh, I am feeling sort of nauseous right now...

Interesting doesn't quite describe it. More like shocking.

Of course what it means is that LA Unified has earned it, learned it and the glove fits. /end my best Johnny Cochran imitation

It's time to celebrate.

Los Angeles Unified School District has earned a gift of Six Million Dollars from the Federal government because...because... because... because... because... because...

There must be a surplus somewhere, because... did I mention this? The money is free.

I do agree in providing good technology to schools, but a laptop for everything that moves is stretching it. It could be spent in different ways maybe. I do believe though, that a laptop for everyone was one of the main selling points of Little Whittle too.

No child left behind? They are all moving to Arizona!

Burbank is cutting 9 teachers due to lower enrollments next year.
