As soon as Clinton left office, this type of quality reporting all but ceased at the Times.

I remember distinctly that the NYT had an editorial that Saddam was lobbying the UN for lifting of sanctions, and the NYT said NO, he could not be trusted, ever, but sanctions were not working and hurting his people.

They encouraged Clinton to think about regime change, with boots on the ground, going to the UN, ect.

I remember thinking, wow, I agree with this editorial, and then realized they were trying to get Clinton out of his oval office messes, by changing the subject.

I wish I knew how to find that editorial.

Does the cessation of interest in terrorism during the 90's correlate to Clinton's leaving office, or to the arrival of Howell Raines in the editor's job at The NYT?
