MILWAUKEE - Weighing in at 13 pounds, 12 ounces, Delaney Jessica Buzzell isn't your average newborn. Her parents have even dubbed her the "Big Enchilada." The baby headed home Tuesday after being delivered by Caesarean section on June 23 a surprising three weeks early.
Her family isn't quite sure what to make of her weight. The father is 6-foot-2 and the mother is 5-foot-7, and nurse Judy Nadolski described them as "regular-sized."
"We're pretty normal," 34-year-old Paul Buzzell said.
Nadolski said carrying the baby in her arms was like holding a 4- or 5-month-old infant. The diapers and baby T-shirts also were a little on the snug side.
"It was ready for a steak," the nurse said. "It had quite an appetite."
This isn't the first supersized baby for Paul and Robin Buzzell, from suburban Mequon.
Their now-4-year-old daughter, Cameron, was born weighing 11 pounds, 8 ounces, and their second child, Alexis, now 2, weighed in at 10 pounds, 8 ounces when she was born.
When Cameron was born, Paul Buzzell said he posted a sign on the door that said "Home of the Whopper." When their second child was born, Buzzell put up a sign describing her as "Whopper Jr."
With the birth of the "Big Enchilada," the Buzzells say their family is now complete.
"This will be the last one," Paul Buzzell said.
The child weighs near double the average newborn. And according to the National Center for Health Statistics, less than 1 percent of babies weigh more than 11 pounds at birth.
This reminds me it's time for lunch.
That is quite a bedside manner. Calling the baby an "it"? That would make me very angry.
What a cute article. The parents have a great sense of humor. But OUCH! that must have hurt! ;-)
Gee, I hope the delivery was by c-section!
My second son was almost 10 pounds but he was two weeks late. Back then, 25 years, they didn't induce as quickly as they do now. In fact we had planned on having him at home with a midwife. My husband and I got the same training that they give EMTs. We had our back up and a doctor on call. We ended up presenting at the hospital fully dilated and 98% effaced but the waters wouldn't break. The doctor broke the waters and he came right out. No eppy and minor tearing. Oh my gosh he was hungry and started having lunch right there before being cut loose.
My husband and the doctor cut him loose and put him in a warm bath.
He's 25 now and normal size and a very talented musician.
Lucky for her it was a C-section. But can you believe this baby was 3 weeks early??? Imagine if the baby had been full term!
Forewarning my dear. ;O)
I wonder of the mother is diabetic.
My dad was 13lbs, grandma had no more children after that.
Wow...I had a 10 lb baby (I'm 5'3", 125 Pounds). It hurt (to say the least).
I thought so too. Diabetics tend to have huge babies!
Wonder if the mom was diabetic.
Ouch, my biggest was ten pounds even (he looked like a three month old). I am glad that mom and baby are well...one thing for this mom to remember, having a baby over 9 lbs. at birth, greatly increases your (the moms') chances of diabetes.
Good grief. This nurse should know better than to refer to the child as an "it"
It's a GIRL, you ninny.. It's a SHE....
"Why I'm Avoiding Sugar in My Last Trimester" Ping!
I have to give credit to my wife. #3 was 10lb. 11 oz and #4 was 12 lb. 7 oz. Both delivered the normal way with no drugs.
When the doc set him on the scale and we saw the weight, he and I said in unison "re-zero the scale."
It was kind of cool, we literally had hospital cafeteria workers coming in to see the giant baby.
I put a banner above the door that read "See the amazing 12 1/2 pound baby, only $1.00!"
The sad thing is that whenever I get sick and start whining, my wife looks at me and says "When you drop a 12 pound kid, then you can whine about feeling bad, until then , get over it."
Some months ago there was a story on FR about a c-section delivery somewhere in Brazil, I believe. 17-something pounds in a single baby (not twins). These must be the last times, with portents and prodigies everywhere.
