Four advertisers have accused the McClatchy Co. and its largest newspaper, the Star Tribune, of inflating paid circulation figures so it could charge higher advertising rates.
In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, the advertisers allege that the Star Tribune required distributors to dump unsold newspapers and manipulated circulation reports to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, a nonprofit group that monitors newspaper circulation.
Clayton Halunen, a lawyer representing the advertisers, said the suit was filed after his firm conducted a six-month investigation into the newspaper's circulation practices.
"The Star Tribune did not distribute the number of newspapers that it claimed to have distributed" since 1999, Halunen said. "We believe its numbers are not accurate, because we've talked to multiple distributors who said they were directed to dump these papers."

Funny. Couldn't happen to nice folks.
Another nail in the coffin of the old media?
Newspaper advertising. What a waste of money. Radio, TV, Internet work. Newspapers are useful as bird cage filler but not for advertising.
Another one of those fiercely liberal papers that can not keep raedership but refuses to adopt to changing demand.
Off theu go into the netherworld of spinning numbers to keep money flow up.
Notheing different from spinning information of so called news.
This failure on the part of the Red Star tribune is indicative of the arrogance, corruption, and intellectual bankruptcy of the entire American Left. It can be stated this way:
"What we do is too important, too consequential to the future of mankind to be restricted to conventions demanded of others. A loss in revenue would have curtailed our ability to inform the public and act as an instrument for social change. We HAD to lie."
This is the excrement that drives the current Democrat machine and their actions. The ends justify the means.
The Left has pushed a sizeable portion of their constituents in to believing the caricature they have created of Republicans. Accepting that Republicans, particularly Bush, have "stolen" two elections, got us into a "quagmire" in Iraq, are "torturing" innocent goat herders, are attempting to "destroy" Social Security, want to "poison the planet", want to put a "Cop in your bedroom", and are just generally looking around for a dog or cat to kick, you can see how these moonbats have deluded themselves into believing their own superiority.
It is absolutely no surprise to me these people lied about their circulation numbers for the purpose of getting advertiser to pay more money than they should based on those numbers. They lie every day on their editorial page and claim they are providing America an important service.
How sad and dangerous is that?

Minnesotans should have dumped the Star years ago. We former Minnesotans refer to it as the red Star. That name still fits.
Yeah, I read Power Line, and they just dump abuse on the Star almost every day. I gotta say I agree with them -- the paper deserves the negative comments.
