(My common ground with terrorists - They want to die for Islam, and we want to kill them.)
To: RobFromGa
Despite other disagreements with some of President Bush's other policies (CFR, Medicare, expanding NAFTA, etc.), this was a great and inspiring speech. And spot on as regards the conflict with the terrorists abroad.
America and our friends are in a conflict that demands much of us. It demands the courage of our fighting men and women, it demands the steadfastness of our allies and it demands the perseverance of our citizens. We accept these burdens because we know what is at stake. We fight today because Iraq now carries the hope of freedom in a vital region of the world, and the rise of democracy will be the ultimate triumph over radicalism and terror. And we fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens, and Iraq is where they are making their stand. So we will fight them there, we will fight them across the world and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won.
America has done difficult work before. From our desperate fight for independence, to the darkest days of a Civil War, to the hard-fought battles against tyranny in the 20th century, there were many chances to lose our heart, our nerve or our way. But Americans have always held firm, because we have always believed in certain truths. We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity and returns to strike us again. We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage. And we know that this great ideal of human freedom entrusted to us in a special way and that the ideal of liberty is worth defending.
I, for one, want to see that same resolve applied to our own borders for the exact same reasons. I want to see it applied to our growing confrontation with the Communist Chinese. To this point, I do not believe the same level of resolve has applied in those places...and, IMHO, it needs to.

That was a damn good speech imo. There is no good way to tell people that we will continue to lose good men and women while they are ridding the world of scum.

If he had lost Hispanic votes, President Kerry would be presiding over the Iraqi War and I don;t think that would be a pretty sight.

I do not believe he would have lost them. The legal hispanics immigrants and a large part of American citizens of hispanic descent support Bush and they support good immigration policy that strengthens our security and our society and would still have voted for him IMHO. Those who are left leaning and liberal would still have voted for Kerry.
So, I personally do not believe it would have cost him...but either way, we are now eight months past those elections and the issue still needs to be addressed with the same resolve we are displaying abroad.

If you spot a source, I am very interested. Not that polls should dictate policy but during an important election cycle, it is important to choose ones battles wisely...

[I thank those of you who have re-enlisted in an hour when your country needs you. And to those watching tonight who are considering a military career, there is no higher calling than service in our Armed Forces. We live in freedom because every generation has produced patriots willing to serve a cause greater than themselves. Those who serve today are taking their rightful place among the greatest generations that have worn our nation's uniform.
When the history of this period is written, the liberation of Afghanistan and the liberation of Iraq will be remembered as great turning points in the story of freedom.]
This is absolutely true, though there are members of congress (guess which party they're from) who think just the opposite of this.
We have the opportunity to bring freedom and democracy to a large portion of the world on a scale that is as great as during world war II, and the security benefits to all nations on Earth should be obvious. The people who are on the front lines of this fight should be honored, not besmirched.

Good-looking speech. Wish I had seen the Prez deliver it.

Yeah, what's up with that? I went to the WH website earlier, saw that it didn't have paragraphs, and opted not to read it. I can't believe those newbies left out the paragraph tags! ;)

I can only go from my own experience. As a native Texan, I developed many friendships with those of hispanic descent while growing up, and have made more friendships here in Idaho. The vast majority of those I know support Bush and conservative principles in general and have very direct and hard feelings for any of the Aztland or other militant, liberal groups which only serve to destroy the freedoms and way of life these folks enjoy just like you and me.
