I really don't get why everyone gets so worked up over a novel. If I was head of the studio I'd green light it no matter what my personal feelings on the subject matter, with all the controversy surrounding it it's bound to make a lot of money. Having Tom Hanks won't hurt either, I think he'll be great for the main character from the book.
America is about money and capitalism. A blockbuster book or movie is frankly good for my portfolio.
