By the time they actually finish it, the whole USA will be running off of fusion power.

Fifty years ago fusion power was supposed to be ready in fifty years. Today, the "experts" are still saying fifty years. Saying that France will have the first fusion reactor is like saying that Britain will be where the warp drive is built. Pointless.

We have the solution today to the world's energy needs and environmentalists have killed it.

If we ever do get fusion power going, it won't take long before environmentalists scare people with stories of runaway reactors turning into fusion bombs, neutron radiation killing everyone around the plant, heavy water poisoning, etc.

France won an international competition today to be the site of the world's first nuclear fusion reactor,

France also announced subcontracts with Iran to be the site
of the world's second nuclear fusion reactor to be used for
power generation and medical purposes.

France, a good place to work the "bugs" out of such a device.

By the time they finally get it completed, the descendants of Tunisian and Algerian Muslims will be running France.

It's a joint effort between Japan, France, S Korea, the US and one other country that I forgot. 5 countries in total. Only France and Japan were considered for location. S> Korea was eliminated because of security and the US was eliminated because enviormental concerns would double the cost and it would be fought in the courts. Also it would probably never be licensed. Until the enviormental agenda is change there will not be any new nuclear plants in the US. Sadly we brought it on ourselves by letting small segments of society and their political allies run out of control.

Does anybody else think it's strange to be attempting to build a practical application first and hope that the supporting basic research comes along in time to justify it? It's a little like designing a teapot and hoping that by the time you're finished someone else discovers fire.

I wish them luck, actually, but if other government efforts are any guide 12 billion is going to be a drop in the bucket.

"France won an international competition today to be the site of the world's first nuclear fusion reactor, an estimated $12 billion project that many scientists see as essential to solving the world's future energy needs."

Good to hear France/Europe beat other countries.

This is good news for France and the Cradle of Civilization - Europe.

Putting this in France is a real win-win!

If it works, we get to reap benefits.

If it catastrophically fails, we still benefit!
