Alcohol, Tobacco Use, Gambling, among other things. For example, how do you think the SBC would react if an Archbishop decided he wanted public school students to pray "Hail Mary" each day.

And I know this because I am a Catholic, and I live in a city where we do have an Evangelical community, and one religion in general, the name prude, and the name for the denomination are synonymous

Alcohol, tobacco use, gambling, among other things, may still be issues in Backwater, USA, but one point of the article is that evangelicals, in general, are more sophisticated, educated, inclusive, and less legalistic that the fundies of 80 years ago. I've circulated in evangelical circles for 30 years, and I've never seen alcohol or tobacco use, or even gambling, to be much of an issue, because salvation does not turn on whether one does or doesn't engage in these things. Whether the diminishment of these issues is a good thing is up for debate.

Very many SBC church members and churches with we are familiar would not offend their congregations by hard preaching on ANY subject. Give me the name of just one SBC pastor who would preach an entire message against tobacco use. I'm not sure you could find one. Maybe not even anymore against alcohol use...I mean, an entire 30 to 40 minute sermon. Most of them would get run out by the deacon boards.

But I am interested to see a few Baptists coming to the surface on Free Republic upon the Fred Phelps thing, and the President speaking to the SBC.

Okay, so you're wordly and the SB's are "prudes". Sounds pretty leftist to me.

Protestants DON'T use Alcohol, tobacco, nor gamble? News to me. The hardest drinking and biggest consumers of tobacco are in the Bible Belt. Jack Daniels? Where do you think that is distilled? Southern Comfort? Wild Turkey? Last time I checked these were wildly drunk in the heart of the Bible Belt. You mean Protestants don't go to casinos? That would mean all those casino boats in Mississippi will have to shut down for lack of patrons.

" how do you think the SBC would react if an Archbishop decided he wanted public school students to pray "Hail Mary" each day.

Apples and oranges comparison. "Hail Marys" contradict SBC theology. The Lord's Prayer contradicts neither, therefore, it's a false comparison.

Only a minority of evangelicals are against alcohol, tobacco, and gambling, or opose them very strongly.

dancing too...
and movies of any kind.
chewing gum.
any deck of cards game other than rook or the bull and bear.
quija boards.
music of the rock variety for sure.
or permutations and variations of any type thereof...
the denominational handbook in my library from the 60s, lists wearing of makeup as a sin of commission.
the wearing of stockings.
the shaving of the legs.

such folks of that and related denominations believe that 'christian rock' is satanic. that statues commemorating the lives and testimonies of the saints are idolatrous blasphemy... and to them, it's not an attack against the Catholics... they TRULY believe that any such thing, will damn them to hell.

Until the mid fifties, men and women, even married had to enter the church and sit on opposite sides of the sanctuary.

Swimming with members of the opposite sex, family or not, was considered a commision of sexual immorality and IN the family, mixed bathing was considered... you know... sexual abuse of the incestous kind.

that is way off the beam with the majority of catholics...
and today's evangelicals. But the fundamentalists are still out there... we just don't get a lot from them on the internet. Some of their close relatives however... do occasionally go on a tear about Ann Coulter's skirts.
