I don't discount Canada's contribution in Vietnam or during WWII. In fact, I generally like Canadians. However, I've noticed a trend with most of the Canadians I have come in contact with over the last 3 or 4 years, particularly a roommate from Ontario whom I had a few years ago: they get particular enjoyment out of pointing out everything that's wrong with the U.S. and Pres. Bush. I honestly don't know why this is the case. Also, they love to generalize about how ignorant the average American is about Canada. My roommate was utterly shocked that I new the Canadian provinces, their capitals, and the current and former prime minister.
I agree with you in that it might not have anything to do with envy, but I do sense a certain level of self-righteousness. As many other posters here have pointed out, it almost seems that they aren't necessarily proud to be Canadian, but that they are proud to not be American. As if being American automatically classifies you as stupid, ignorant, violent, etc., and somehow in constant need of being lectured from others about how you are these very things. I have often wondered if there is some sort of mandatory course in school that provides a step-by-step on how to be condescending to Americans.
I'm not saying that all Canadians are like this, of course, but it has definitely been my experience in most cases.

I travel for work in Western Canada every week, so I know that's not the attitude it those parts. they have a hostility towards those leftists in Ontario as well, you should hear the talk radio in Canada! They bash those leftist bigots every chance they get. I wouldn't be suprized if western Canada separates over liberal corruption and government monopoly in the next few years. Those lefty's are destroying the country, just like they are here.

As many other posters here have pointed out, it almost seems that they aren't necessarily proud to be Canadian, but that they are proud to not be American. As if being American automatically classifies you as stupid, ignorant, violent, etc., and somehow in constant need of being lectured from others about how you are these very things I'm proud of being Canadian . And the existence of the USA or Americans have absolutely nothing to do with it . Being American , like Canadian ,does not disqualify anyone from being stupid , ignorant or violent. As a point how many posts on this thread are stupid ? Show ignorance toward Canada ? How many suggest violence as a reaction to the article? On the other hand I notice that on FR a huge % of the articles posted regarding Canada are taken from Canadian sources and if the subject is in any way connected to the US then some opinion , positive or negative , is offered about the American connection . Maybe, to some that comes across as being a lecture . But it sure doesn't mean we think about you all the time .
Canadians here are told we depend on the US. You are a good market place. But we take 23 % of your exports. That's 32 million people taking 23 % of the exports produced by 300 million Americans. That fact alone is deserving of some thought .We sell you 80-85 % of our exports , a huge percentage of which are raw materials and power that demand world prices in a world market . Only it's more convenient to ship to the US, The USA happens to be closer .
As for protecting us. From whom? Americans are the only ones who have ever invaded us. Not once but four times . Maybe that has something to do with us not wanting to be American.
