The Open Society Institute (OSI) is a private operating and grantmaking
foundation that promotes the development of open societies around the world. OSI is part of an informal network of nearly 50 autonomous nonprofit foundations
created and funded by philanthropist George Soros. In the US, OSI works to
encourage debate in areas where one view of an issue dominates all others and to
strengthen the capacity of marginalized groups to voice their concerns and affect
public policy.
The Criminal Justice Initiative (CJI) seeks to reduce our society's excessive and
inappropriate reliance on punishment and incarceration and increase the use of
public health and socio-economic responses to racial disparity and crime.
Through grantmaking to advocacy and model service organizations and fellowships to scholars, activists and journalists, CJI aims to promote fair and effective
alternatives to incarceration, improve the quality of criminal defense for
indigent persons, reduce the likelihood that former prisoners will return to
prison, and promote strong families and safe communities.
