UNITED NATIONS -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday pressed world leaders to adopt his agenda to overhaul the United Nations this September, as officials marked the 60th anniversary of the world body's creation.
Annan told the General Assembly that the United Nations had seen many successes, such as helping eradicate smallpox and polio nearly everywhere in the world, as well as failures including the 1994 genocide in Rwanda that saw 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus slaughtered.
New threats and challenges require advances in development, security and human rights, Annan said. He urged member states not to pass up the opportunity to adopt his sweeping plan for the United Nations at a summit set for September.
