Kin mourn soldiers, brace for hate group (Westboro Baptist Church blame soldier's death on America)

A Green Beret killed in Afghanistan will be laid to rest in his native Marblehead today as police brace for the anticipated arrival of a Kansas hate group.

``We're in Massachusetts now and we will be in Marblehead,'' said Margie Phelps of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church.

The WBC has blamed the 9/11 attacks and deaths of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan on America's tolerance of homosexuals. The group, which recently demonstrated outside local Catholic churches and public schools it deemed tolerant of homosexuality, has threatened to show up at services today for Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Piper, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan this month.

The group's literature proclaims ``Thank God for IEDs (roadside bombs)'' and states that Piper and other slain soldiers were ``cast into Hell to join other dishonorable Americans.'' Officials in Marblehead and Chicopee, home of slain Marine Capt. John Maloney, have denounced the group's plans to demonstrate at the fallen heroes' funerals. Both men's families have said freedom of speech is something they died trying to protect. Maloney was killed by an IED in Iraq this month.

Personally, I was thinking something a little more extreme.

actual Christians wince, and the rest of the world sneers or laughs at the prospect.

Yep.

These kooks need to be shut up. Freedom of speech has limits and responsibilities. This isn't freedom of speech, this is harassment and invasion of privacy.

How in the world do they get homosexuality was the cause of 9/11 and whatever does it has to do with IED's in Afghanistan, our troops?

People have to blame something I guess. Maybe it's those terrorists living in close quarters.

Squealed like stuck pigs and ran back into their rooms and left town.

I'm glad there's not more of them around. They make a lot of people look bad.

If these morons didn't exist, the lib media would have to invent them. Truth is stranger than fiction with Phelps and his kooks.

Even the detestable Fred Phelps has First Amendment rights, like the Skokie Nazis.

I hope every off duty solider/guardsmen/fireman/policeman within earshot forms a perimeter around the funeral and when these jackasses show up, take 'em out (not violently, just pick them up, drive them to the border of Vermont and let them out).

BTW, can't they be tried on that "crossing state lines to try to incite a riot" business that the Chicago 7 made so famous? Maybe a stretch but hell, it's worth a try!

If IEDs are from God, then they shouldn't object to a few red-blooded Americans setting them off outside their mosque--er, church.

Didn't Fred Phelps endorse Al Gore for President back in 1988?

Phelps did fund-raising for Al Gore's 1988 Presidential campaign.... I'm not so sure he wasn't invented by the left.

This goes far beyond freedom of speech. It's akin to shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theater. I wouldn't mind seeing the church of these protestors burned to the ground--with them in it.

Tonight, I will say a special prayer for Phelps.

May he meet a god more forgiving than him...

Fred.

Please bring your show to East Tennessee. Me and a lot of good old boys have a lesson or several to teach you about respect.

Find I-81 and I-26 and drive to the intersection.
