An editorial in Saturday's NYT denounces as "cynical" Karl Rove's observation that (in the NYT's paraphrase): "conservatives and liberals had different reactions to 9/11." It continues: "Let's be clear: Americans of every political stripe were united in their outrage and grief, united in their determination to punish those who plotted the mass murder and united behind the war in Afghanistan, which was an assault on terrorists."
Oh if only that were true. But the NYT itself is daily crammed with evidence that Rove is right and that the NYT editorialists are wrong. Take for example this story, which appeared on the front page, upper left hand corner of Friday's paper. Here's the lede:
"Military doctors at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, have aided interrogators in conducting and refining coercive interrogations of detainees, including providing advice on how to increase stress levels and exploit fears, according to new, detailed accounts given by former interrogators."
And it continues:
"The accounts shed light on how interrogations were conducted and raise new questions about the boundaries of medical ethics in the nation's fight against terrorism."
You might well wonder: what questions could this story possibly raise? What on earth could be wrong with the military using psychologists to help it figure out how to interrogate more effectively? Or to be more specific how on earth could even the NYT possibly find this use of psychologists objectionable? The interrogations in this case after all involve terrorists captured in Afghanistan, the war that the NYT tells us it unequivocally supports. The psychologists were not involved in any alleged abuse or maltreatment of prisoners.
Yet the paper gives prolonged and highly visible credence to complaints that "there was no way that psychiatrists at Guantánamo could ethically counsel interrogators on ways to increase distress on detainees." How, how, how?
Hold your jaw in your mouth with both hands and listen:

Gee, a NYT column writer, and couldn't even write their own stuff. This looks like the DNC talking point from last week.
Karl Rove was right about different reactions to 9/11. Medusa in Greek mythology had the power of turning to stone whoever looked upon her.
This was not an issue for Perseus who did not look directly at her but used his shield. This all suggests the one should not look directly upon evil to understand its motives, because doing so would cause one become inactive or turn to stone. No one can ever understand what drove the men who drove the planes into the World Trade Center. Evil is evil, and to urged restraint, offer therapy or understanding is to look upon Medusa and turn into stone or become immobile and indecisive.
Winston Churchill said that Hitler/nazism or todays Islamic/nazism are driven by what Churchill called "currents of hatred so intense as to sear the souls of those who swim upon them." Or as the Greek mythology would say, their hatred is so intense as to turn to stone the souls of those who look upon her. Liberals looked upon
Medusa and turn into stone.

I wonder if Durbin ever considered that the Nazis might have used psychiatrists to interrogate prisoners? Oh. Never mind..
Has Durbin or the other Dems ever described ANYONE other than US soldiers as Nazis? I'm gonna guess no.
The Twin Towers were destroyed because this country has tolerated our enemies. Carter and Clinton are directly responsible for the rise and empowerment of Al Queda and the Islamist mafia. It is their squishy ethics that has permitted the rise of consummate evil. The idiot minions of these wimpy presidents are hard at work seeking to justify their cowardice.
Make no mistake. The real war against terrorism will not be fought with bullets. It is a war of ideas and the enemy seeks to destroy this great nation with a cesspool of lies.
The very idea that Ground Zero could be suggested as a site to advance morally bankrupt ideology is the clear work of the enemy. Such thinking must be rooted out of our society and consigned to the dungheap of failed ideologies.
Liberalism is, after all, a profoundly dangerous mental illness.
Liberals love the U.S. like OJ loved Nicole -- Ann Coulter
Yes Drs. should not help with the interrogation of prisoners that might lead to saving thousands of lives. They should be used only to dehydrate and starve brain damaged people. That is what their medical training is for.
