I wasn't paying attention, hell I didn't even know what any of those people looked like aside from movies, or album covers. Never listened to the music of Queen, never even thought about the meaning of the groups name.

If you think about what these guys were doing back in the '70s it was deliberately weird and shocking and iconoclastic. Rock star behavior. I don't know that Freddie Mercury would have approved of the mainstreaming of gay culture.
