Bush's Upcoming Speech Modeled After Address He Gave to U.S. Army War College Last Year

NEW YORK, June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The model for President Bush's speech to the nation this week was his address to the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., last year, Newsweek reports in the current issue. At that time, the public was badly rattled by the gruesome images of guards abusing prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison. In the War College speech, the president laid out some markers for the Iraqis on the way to achieving "democracy and freedom" -- and allowing American troops to go home. Two of those mileposts have been passed: the turnover of sovereignty a year ago and last January's elections in Iraq.

The next fixed points will be the writing of an Iraqi constitution, elections for a full-term government and, ultimately, the training of Iraqi forces to secure the country. The president will deliver a fairly upbeat progress report on these steps, but he will be careful not to set a timetable for success -- or for American withdrawal, report National Security Correspondent John Barry, Senior White House Correspondent Richard Wolffe and Assistant Managing Editor Evan Thomas in the July 4 issue of Newsweek (on newsstands Monday, June 27). As long as the American people "understand the trajectory, they are going to have a considerable tolerance for sacrifice," said a senior White House aide, who did not wish to be identified.

President Bush's base may need a little restoring in Congress. But so far the administration has not seen any really meaningful defections. "Is the Republican caucus nervous? Sure," Sen. John McCain, a strong hawk, tells Newsweek. "But I haven't detected any real erosion in support for the policy. Because the senators know that we can't afford to fail in Iraq."

President Bush needs to really give an excellent speech. I think the American people are ready to listen.

Would like him to comment on sacrifice and ask the media to sacrifice by not broadcasting anti-Ameirican hatred.

They'll fume, but at least it will put them on notice and hold their reporting up for scrutiny by the American people.

I'm worried because I hear more Abu Ghrabib pics are coming out and I fear the media will just do what they did last year.

I agree. He should not merely repeat the old platitudes, but present new facts, such as some operational details of busted plots, etc.

Exactly, specifics. Not...hard work, hard work. And clearly connect Iraq and the Global War on Terror.

Then, and this is important, keep on it. He can't allow more drift on this.

Thank you for your CLARITY, PfP.

LOVE is coming to Vietnam, finally.

Thank GOD it isn't taking 30 years for LOVE's arrival in Iraq.

With it's sins of commission and omission America's Mainstream Media has thrived, instead, on its own HATE against LOVE and FREEDOM for the last 45 years.

And those who lost their FREEDOM in the interim have paid dearly because of it:
