Around 9:55 am on June 26, 2.9 miles away to the North East of Baek-ryong Island, a N. Korean barge indicated the willingness to defect. It was towed to Yong-ki-po Harbor at Baek-ryong Island at 11:40 am, according to the (S. Korean) Joint Chief of Staffs.
Inside the boat were Mr. Hong(male, age:42), Mr. Moon(female, age:39), a 15-year-old boy. They are presumed to be a family. They reportedly left Yong-hyun, Ku-mi-po District, N. Korea.around 5:30 am, June 25.
The barge is an 1.7-ton boat with its own engine. The three were being investigated by the military, including the exact nature of their defection.
On June 17, 2005, a N. Korean couple in their 40's, riding a 0.3-ton 'unpowered' barge defected in the water near the same island, which is located in West Sea(Yellow Sea. )
In another incident, around 11:55 am, June 26, a N. Korean fishing boat strayed past the Northern Limit Line (NLL), by 1.8 mile into the South. It was spotted by S. Korean Navy 3.3 mile to the east of Baek-ryong Island.
It was determined that the boat strayed due to navigational error, and sent back to the North with navigational compass provided.
