I believe that that society has become a nation of psychopaths, because of genetic mutation, due to extremism(and radical hatred). It's the old argument of nature vs nurture. Humans do evolve for better or worse. We've been doing it since Adam and Eve, and some folks turned out better than others. I'll mention the Amalekites in the Bible.
