>>> "the way he abused his wife" --KellyAdmirer <<<

I don't know, that might be a bit of an exaggeration . . . let's not stoop to the level of the tabloids by taking things out of context. I'd say some pretty nasty things to the woman my husband had an affair with too! (rightfully so!) . . . but "abuse"? Give me a break . . . the guy made a mistake (yes, a BIG one), but he obviously still loves his wife and regrets what he's done . . . I don't know about you, but I sure as hell am not perfect!!

. . . just my two cents.

IMHO, anyone who cheats on his wife is not worthy to be entrusted with political power. OTOH, I have to give him credit for not caving into blackmail.

So, my conclusion is that he owes an apology to his constituents too, at the very least. If he states that it only affects his family, then he should be forceably removed from his position of public trust immediately.

A quote from Tom Umberg in the LA Times:

"I want to apologize to THOSE who have been hurt by what I've done"

He obviously realizes that the ramifications of his actions extend beyond his immediate family and that he did 'hurt' his constituents ("THOSE" who entrusted him w/ political power, albeit this really is in the realm of his personal life . . . yes, I know---where do you draw the line?)

You also have to give the man credit for going on record with such a widely read newspaper to OWN his mistake (NOT make excuses, as many politicians would do) and apologize to his constituents (clearly, he already apologized to his family . . .no need to involve the newspaper for that).

And then there's always $$$$$ . . . which I'm sure he has plenty of. He could have taken the blackmail, paid off this lady, and walked away scotch-free (not that any politcal official would ever fathom such duplicity!/sarcasm).

"I figured we'd have some Republicans calling up, laughing in the phone, but we haven't had that," Urch said.

In Pyschology this is called "projection".

The main question I have in this is "Did he come clean because he had little to no choice?"

I admit to some ambivalence on this one. OTOH, he has broken the public trust, OTOH, he did not try to hide things. Before I could make a judgement one way or t'other on this one, I'd need to know a whole lot more.

He had no choice, his mistress was spilling the beans.

I admit to some ambivalence on this one...he did not try to hide things.

Well, apparently he did and did so for 4 years. Only when he was going to be exposed did he admit what he did. His wife should dump him, he has proven he can not be trusted.

It gets me the way when women do this, they can do the most horrible things to their husbands; have an affair, spend their husband's money to cheat on him, and then twist it all around and play the victim.

And how stupid for anyone doing something like this to have emails saved on a computer! At least he was smart enough not to deny the affair, discovery would have been disastrous in a divorce proceeding.

Well, you are right about that. I guess what I meant, was that he didn't pull a Clinton - which all too many of our politicians seem to be willing to do nowadays.

But thanks for putting it into perspective. Simply put, if he can't be trusted to be faithful to his wife, then how can he be trusted to be faithful to his country?

"how can he be trusted to be faithful to his country?"

aw man, gimme a break . . . i think people mesh personal lives with politics WAY too much. i mean, clinton may not have had the best morals, but you can't deny he was a damn good leader for our country----and that's the JOB we're paying him for, right? not to be some mother theresa role model for moral inspiration.

so i guess the mr. and mrs. are going to try to work it out according to the OC register. i mean, there's a lot to be said about that---on both their parts. too often people just throw in the hat and it seems like (at least from the media glips) they are actually doing pretty well. and tom's recent vote in the gay marriage bill (esp. what he said about his 3 children on the floor influencing his decision) really shows that he's getting priorities in order: HIS FAMILY.

on another [random] note, if ya want my honest opinion, i think robin umberg (the mrs.) should take over as the politician in the family. did you know she's a GENERAL in the army . . . (outranks the hubby). very nice.

...met his mistress through Democratic Party activities.

You mean he/she/it is a transvestite/transsexual from Transylvania?
