The first televised mayoral debate of the upcoming special election is on TV NOW. Donna Frye, Richard Rider, Myke Shelby, Pat Shea and there others are there live. Michael Tuck and Kimberley Hunt-Smith are part of the Q/A panel. Paul Bloom is moderating.
Donna's talking about her 'success' with so-called "open government"... Jerry Sanders is up now. He made a bad joke about dog years and rambling about pressing the flesh. He's obviously got some kind of prepared remarks. Sanders is considered the 'defacto' runner-up to the union's pick Donna Frye. The local GOP is pushing Sanders.
Please ping your San Diego freepers.
Pat Shea up now. Clearly speaking off the cuff. Talks of affection for the city and talks of going to USDHS then off to Harvard and his legal practice and specifically his experience with the Orange County, CA Ch 9 bankruptcy reorganization some years ago.
STEVE FRANCES, This is the one for Mayor.
Conservative, Gov. and business background.
Local GOP supporting him.
Shelby talking about illegals and gangs - that if you want to fix the pension hire an actuary.
lol jim bell commie, as if the mayor of san diego can solve the worlds energy problems.
Steve Francis is up now. I think he's wearing eyeshow and maybe lip balm. He's reading off prepared notes and it shows badly. He's promsing a 10% cut in management fat and 20% cut in the City Council budget. No tax increases. He seems nervous. Wants to cut pay & perks of politicians. He actually stayed in the allotted top. NY Myke up now. He's been spending way too much time in the sun. He's hitting on the pension issue as the 'one' issue. He talks about the border issue, first responders and needing to take on the unions via renegotiation. He'd in some kind of sport coat. No tie. Jim Bell up next. He's not wearing a jacket, just a white-shirt and tie (which is loose). He's talking about oil!! And energy costs. He looks like a vermin due to an overbite. Again on energy. If you haven't guessed he's our local envro-energy wacko.
Im in San Diego this week and next week on a biz trip - fascinating to watch this. Thanks for posting about it!
Opening statements finished. Commercial break with a teaser for pension talk.
No problem! I'm glad I noticed it hidden in the TV listings.
Jim Bell - "eliminate obvious terrorist targets" in his list.
Whats that mean, get rid of productive businesses, military bases, etc?
I am willing to bet that he has no interest in "eliminating" terrorists!
San Diego is gorgeous, I'm staying in Mira Mesa and just had dinner in Del Mar.
If it weren't in California I'd be happy to live here.
I will *never* live in California.
((( PING )))
Reminder: you can listen on RADIO at AM 1170, KCBQ.
Not listening. How is Frances doing?
Frye, bla, bla bla bla
Richard Rider up now. Reminds folks he fought the Charger deal in court. Says the fundamental issue is the overly high salary 20-40% higher than private sector. Says pensions 2-5 times higher than private sector. What are we getting for our money. Says the labor unions aren't going to come to the table willingly. He talks of Yellow Pages test and starts doing competative bidding. Claims $200 million in potential savings. Donna up next...
Not listening. How is Frances doing?
Had a brief open statement. has not been questioned yet.
