Well, if you want consumers to spend money like drunken sailors, there's really no substitute for teenagers and college students....lots of them.

Will they (the Germans) solve it the way they did last time this happened?"

Mr, Natural The ruling German political party is already going the same route it did 70 years ago: it is institutionalizing a scapegoat through hate.

Before it was the Jews, now it is the Americans, the "Evil Capitalists".

Good comment by Untenured. With "two few cradles and too few funerals" these countries face a demographic crisis that can only affect their economies negatively. That, and their fixation on preserving an unsustainable "social model" puts them on th edge of a cliff.

You may be right. My first thought was to disagree, because we are not there to be victimised, and even if we were, we are not the people who "go quietly". But after a little more thought, I don't see that it matters. The main thing is that they have a scapegoat; someone to blame for the hard times.

Well, let them blame it on us; if it helps them suck it up and get their house in order. The danger is all theirs; if there is a rise of militarism, they will pay the price: I think that if Germany sends its armies across its borders a third time, Germany will be no more.

But I can't see that. I don't think they have it in them. Too many of their brave and strong were lost in WWI and WWII. What's left is no real danger to anyone.

I don't think they cn get their houses in order. It would take a baby boom of unimaginable proportions, starting tomorrow.

Read somewhere that by 2050 50% of children in French schools will be muslim?

That's a helluva problem to have to overcome even if its not THAT critical yet. It will be.

The rest of the continent, oh well. But the day Rome falls, there's going to be a shock around the world. 2000 years of Christian history literally destroyed by the heathens. St. Pauls converted into a mosque. The treasuries with the greatest treasures of church history broken into and destroyed. It's going to be mind-boggling.

Didn't the Fatima prophecy mention something about the massacre of the Princes of the Church? The Cardnials and the Pope? Unfortunately, we may live to see it.

Call me a pessimist, but I'm a pessimist.

I wonder what declining/aging populations might have to do with this deflation/depression combination

I believe it has been established, and validated in Japan, that as people age beyond middle age they buy progressively fewer consumer goods. They have everything they need, they don't need anything new, and status symbols lose their attractiveness relative to retirement and financial security.

I would say that aging populations have a very distinct effect on spending and thus on the approach to the deflationary tipping point. If so, Eurozone is definitely in for it.

..aging populations have a very distinct effect on spending..

And the lack of children. If you have kids, you spend money; there's no choice about it. And you work to support them.

Old folks ... like you say, they are not creating wealth (working); they are more interested in saving than spending.

Too many old folks .. not enough kids ... just a big social machine that is running out of gas ...

The biggest problem is the euro's specific problem area.

If it was economics, that could be fixed. If it was financial, that could be fixed. Even the EU could be fixed maybe. But demographics? That only changes in wide swings in decades and centuries. That's a REAL problem area. The WORST

I may not like the euros anymore, but I really don't hate em enough to wanna see them all dead! But that might happen in my lifetime

yeah, they'll find that their vaunted secularism doesn't work in the Islamic world.

Convert or die!

And OUR problems will begin when Islam inherits those nukes

Well, while I agree that it's probably pretty well advanced, I'm not sure that it'll be necessary.

I'm thinking back to a story I read last month about a strike by students protesting some educatonal policy change.

Being french they went out and protested.

A gang of about 1000 islamics went out in bands of 10-20 and beat the living sh** outta these students, stealing their walkmans, cells and the like, dragging them around by their hair, beating them down and kicking the daylights out of them. All the while yelling about little frenchies and french pussies and the like, real racial stuff.

I'm thinking that they learned from that that a mob mentality works wonders. Can you imagine what a crowd of 25-50,000 savage muslims can do in the way of damage if let loose in the streets of Paris or Nice or any of the other big french cities?

Can you imagine the stink of fear on the cowardly french political and intellectual class if a million muslims surrounded the Palace and Parliment?

They can have sharia introduced without firing a shot with these kinds of numbers.

And there are TWELVE MILLION or more muslims in France.

The possibilities are only limited by their darkest nightmares.

There's 25 mil or so across europe? What happened if there was half a million or a million angry savages running havoc through every western european capitsl? They don't have the military to cope with something like that and their cops can't deal with them in small groups.

Oh well. It's late and I'm just rambling ;)

I'm not Les Nessman. If I remember right he was a character on WKRP in Cincinnati.

If you're criticizing me for being overly concerned about proper grammar, my response is that it's one thing to type something once incorrectly because of a typo. It's another thing to have a tagline that you use every day with an extra word in it. Can't it be fixed?

Oh, no! No criticism intended. Your user name is tied to a line from one of the funnier episodes of the WKRP series. I wasn't sure if that was behind your choice of moniker. Sorry if I offended you.

A typo can be corrected in any subsequent post of anything but the screen name itself.

OK. FYI I got the idea for my screen name from Hamlet's soliloquy.

It was also used as the title of a fake episode of a proposed spin-off to Star Trek about the accounting department on board the ship. That was on a really funny website that no longer exists: brunchingshuttlecocks.com
