"Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" asked Joseph Welch in his famous confrontation with the pathologically cruel Joe McCarthy. "Have you left no sense of decency?"
More than a half-century later, I would ask the same question of Florida's governor, Jeb Bush.
In an abuse of power that has been widely denounced, and has even appalled many of his own supporters in the Republican Party, Governor Bush has tried to keep the Terri Schiavo circus alive by sending state prosecutors on a witch hunt against her husband, Michael.
The state attorney who has been pushed by the governor into pursuing this case told me yesterday he has seen nothing to indicate that a crime was committed. Nevertheless, the inquiry continues.
Governor Bush asked Bernie McCabe, the state attorney for Pinellas County, to "take a fresh look" at this already exhaustively investigated case to determine, among other things, whether Michael Schiavo had perhaps waited too long to call for help after discovering that his wife had collapsed early one morning 15 years ago.
Mr. McCabe did not seem particularly enthusiastic about his mission. "I wouldn't call it an investigation," he told me in a telephone conversation. The word "investigation," he said, "is a term of art in my business."
He then explained: "When I conduct an investigation, it would mean that I have a criminal predicate. In other words, that I have some indication that a crime has occurred. That's my job...

Michael may have the right to scuttle away, and hide in dark shadows. But casting him as the victim? No way.
You are babbling; did you forget to take your meds tonight?
You are a real "one trick Pony", aren't you?
Just repeat the same thing over and over.
This is the latest "twist" to this never ending story on FR.
The very people who were in hysterics because a court gave Michael Schiavo the right to decide for his wife now INSIST on telling the rest of us how WE will be permitted to die! They are convinced we're on the road to mass euthanasia -- and that living wills should NOT be permitted in ANY circumstances!
Mine's pretty good ~ bigger than average too ~ much bigger!
Saw where a young lady with about 10% of normal brain mass just graduated from highschool.
However, that's not of any importance here. Rather, this is actually all about you, and if your brain size is deficient, you need to get on with doing the decent thing you know.
BTW, don't be wasting those hospital beds either ~ really sick people need them ~
Wow, that's almost as good as "It's not that the memos were faked, it's what is IN the memos."
Well done!
It's still not about you Howlin.
Whatever Jeb wants to do is what Jeb wants to do. If he needs your opinion I'm sure he'll ask you. Otherwise, he won't.
If you'd like to do it differently, get elected Governor.
10% normal brain mass that is fully functional is 99% better than Terri Schiavo's condition.
I'd recommend some self-improvement courses down at the Senior Citizens center for both of you if it would do any good.
Please stay on topic, and remember, this really isn't about either of you. Jeb is doing something he promised, and as another poster noted, Mark Fuhrman has a book on the way and I'm sure Jeb doesn't wish to be caught with his britches down.
What ideas? You just keep talking in circles.
"...that's almost as good as "It's not that the memos were faked, it's what is IN the memos."
Interesting. I make a statement of logic, and you equate it to a lie. You must be proud of the way your mind works.
I only need one exception to prove to the contrary, and I did so. We can find URLs to cite, but I still need only one item to disprove your contention.
Now you've brought up a credentials question, so may I ask just what your credentials for saying that are?
Just spell them out ~ degrees, years of experience, cases handled, etc.
I can't speak for Howlin' but my tad is NOT deficient!
the Senior Citizens center for both of you
Ummm .. first I'd have to actually BE a senior citizen.
this really isn't about either of you
Ah, there it is ... your phrase of the day, I was wondering how you were going to work it in.
I simply came back to the original point that you've left unanswered.
It's like you've brought a knife to a gunfight.
To digress. I would like to have the decency evaluated, of some of the traitors that Joe McCarthy accused. They sold out their country to the now defunct Soviet Union.
I have seen Mr Shiavo on the television. The jury is still out (some of us). Whether this sort of feeling is accurate, I cannot not say. The feeling that I have, is one of a distinct unease. I just do not feel right about this gentleman.
The best I can do is to say- as a thinking person is this. Michael Shiavo could have erred- on the side of compassion.
