Merced residents sue to stop housing authority from ending rent subsidy

Fresno -- Low-income Merced residents who sued the county's housing authority to prevent the agency from cutting back their rent subsidies had their request for temporary relief denied Wednesday, attorneys said.

Five Merced residents — including Rosalinda Miranda, who has cancer, and Julia Barraza, a working mother of six — sued the Housing Authority for the County of Merced on Tuesday, saying the agency's decision to stop giving them housing assistance was illegal, and could leave them homeless.

On Wednesday, a Merced County judge denied their request for a temporary restraining order, which would have ensured the plaintiffs received help with rent while the case was resolved.

Housing Authority Executive Director Nick Benjamin said he had no comment on the suit.

The attorneys representing Barraza, Miranda and the other plaintiffs said they understood that when Congress cut funding for the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, local agencies like Merced's Housing Authority suffered the consequences.

But that doesn't justify ending subsidies to clients who have followed the rules, like successfully participating in Welfare to Work programs and finding jobs, the attorneys said.

Don't they all?
The lesson here is obvious. Never, ever, give some people charity, because once started, there is an implied commitment (at least in their minds) to continue it forever!

Notice that we are not told how long any of the plaintiffs have been on this "temporary" help?
