Yes, initally he did do this, but he came out much later with his side when many in the Kennedy camp were blaming him and Markham for not protecting the Senator, ie having the party in the first place, and letting him drink too much etc.
This is why I ask the question, what happened to them, as they were really the only people who actually knew what had happened.
