CA: Massive Police Action Nets 19 Gang Arrests (Vineland Boyz)

BURBANK, Calif. -- At least 19 arrests were made overnight in a raid targeting a violent San Fernando Valley gang suspected of killing two police officers.

The early-morning raid began at 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, when officers began serving 43 search and arrest warrants on members of the Vineland Boyz gang in Los Angeles, Palmdale, Rosamond, Valencia, Bakersfield and Simi Valley, police said. The Vineland Boyz gang is suspected in the fatal shooting of Los Angeles Officer James Beyea in 1988 and the 2003 shooting death of Burbank Officer Matthew Pavelka.

By 5:30 a.m., at least 19 of the 43 gang members being sought were in custody, and "Operation Silent Night" was continuing, said Los Angeles police Chief William Bratton. He promised an update at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"We're very pleased this morning with the results of this operation," Bratton said.

Pavelka's father, also a police officer, told NBC4's Robert Kovacik how he felt about the murder of his son at the hands of gang members.

"I feel some responsibility for what happened because Matthew followed in my footsteps, on a path that was a dangerous one, and, unfortunately, he was one of those officers that paid the ultimate price."

The arrests were made under the federal RICO law, which was enacted to dismantle organized crime groups.

During a rare 5 a.m. news conference just hours after the arrests, LAPD Chief William Bratton called the gang a "modern-day Mafia."

The task force that served the warrants and made the arrests involved 900 local and federal law enforcement officers and nine police helicopters acting simultaneously.

The Vineland Boyz gang is a criminal organization, "involved in drug trafficking, murders, attempted murders and extortion," Bratton said.

Bratton said Tuesday's operation was the culmination of an 18-month investigation.

Bratton called the Vineland Boyz gang members "poster boys" who had been targeted by the LAPD.

"In other words, this is just the beginning," Kovacik said.

>>19 arrests were made overnight in a raid targeting a violent San Fernando Valley gang<<

>>The task force that served the warrants and made the arrests involved 900 local and federal law enforcement officers and nine police helicopters<<

That works out to 47 officers per arrest.

900 officers times $20 (hourly wage) = $18,000 times 8 (one shift)- $144,000 divided by 19(number arrested)= $7,578 per arrest.

I know the hourly wage is too low, but I'm hoping they weren't all involved for the full shift. The cost for an officer is closer to $95 per hour when the patrol car and vacation/sicktime are added on. I didn't include $1800 per hour for the helicopters or $57 a day for jail or ?? for 19 public attornies or for ?? judges.

I have a gut feeling that they are rounding these violent criminals up nationwide because they are fearful of riots this summer.

"I have a gut feeling that they are rounding these violent criminals up nationwide because they are fearful of riots this summer."

That would certainly stir things up. Americans have been mesmerized for far to long by the constant droning of our leaders that everything's gonna be ok, just leave it to me. Well, we left it to you and you sold us out. We work 50 or 60 hours a week just to keep our heads above water, we're taxed to death in order to achieve "social justice" and we're ignored by the people we elected to look after things who generally only look after themselves. We need something to jolt us out of our comlacency.

Well, yes, but they have to send tactical teams, not patrol officers. They shot Ofc Pavelka with an AR15

The gangs run LA, not the cops

Goes way beyond LA. Violent gangs are nearly everywhere. M 13 is scattered nationwide, including NY and up and down the eastcoast. They are some of the most violent. The ultra-violent, U.S.-trained elite, Mexican paramilitary commandos known as the "Zetas," responsible for hundreds of murders along the border this year, have expanded their enforcement efforts on behalf of a drug cartel by setting up trafficking routes in six U.S. states.

A U.S. Justice Department memo says the U.S.-trained units have recently moved operations into Houston, San Antonio and the states of California, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida. They have been operating in Dallas for at least two years, according to the feds.

"I didn't see any names of the perps."

Of course not. That would reveal that they are either black or Mexican. And that would be racist.

I was wondering if any of Mayor Villar's family was swept up in the raid.

Hey, I'm impressed. Usually it reads "after a two year investigation," this 18-month investigation must mean they are doing better. Personally, I don't think it ahould take 18 months either but this "is" progress.

It is more like a revolution than a riot. Over 15 million strong.

Still, it is a drop in the bucket.
