You are in for a rewarding and interesting experience. I have been growing tobacco in Kansas for the past three years.
When the seeds germinate, the plants will appear to be deformed. they twist and turn and bend at the bottom. It is natural.
It is legal to grow a tenth of an acre, so don't sweat the BATF. Don't buy any books. It is all free on the internet.
Tobacco grows well in any soil that will grow a tomato.
Don't try to keep seeds. Mature plants will produce zillions of seeds from flowers. Indoor plants will flower year round.
The curing process is slow and you do need to read all you can about how you are going to cure the leaves. The plants are tough and prolific leaf producers. Stay in touch.

Thanks. I think I'm really doing it just because I want to see if I can. Being a rich, white conservative republican (snicker), I can easily afford to buy any kind of smoke I want. But it's really the tax thing that irks me to no end. I'll keep updating this thread as things progress.
Day two. Sprayed seeds. Nothing yet.
(didn't expect any, but I'm a little anxious)

Well, PING, then.
Starting again with twelve tonight and will start another twelve next week.
In case you haven't heard, my Mom accidentally kicked the growing tray over and killed them all last year.
