Wood 'faces death' in Iraq return

DOUGLAS Wood could be killed if he returned to Iraq after calling his captors "arseholes", a spokesman for the Mufti of Australia says.

Mr Wood, 63, arrived in Australia yesterday after spending 47 days as a hostage in the war-torn country, but has indicated he may go back for business reasons.

But Keysar Trad, a spokesman for Australian Mufti Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilaly, said he would be very afraid for Mr Wood's life if he returned to Iraq.

"I would be very concerned for his safety, especially after the comments that he's made yesterday with the negative references he's made to the people who were holding him," Mr Trad told the Nine Network.

"If you compare that with other hostages who have been freed, you'd find that they actually came out and stated that they well looked after, they were fed," he said.

"In his case, he also received regular medical treatment ... (and) to go back into a society like this I would really be concerned for his safety.

"I would be be very afraid this time they may not just target him for captivity, they may just target him point blank."

Mr Wood yesterday labelled his captors "arseholes", and said there were times during his captivity when he thought he would be killed.

But he also suggested he may go back to Iraq to pursue commercial opportunities, despite pleas from his family to stay away.

Questions remain over how Mr Wood came to be freed, with the mufti saying he helped arrange the release and the government claiming it was part of a general "sweep-and-cordon" operation.

Mr Trad said the mufti was hoping the captors would release a statement soon.

"The mufti's hoping that there will be a statement either from the insurgents or from some of the go-betweens," Mr Trad said.

"He said that the release was, in the end, meant to be a gift to the people of Australia, that the people of Iraq show that they have no ill-will towards Australia at all."

But the mufti is now most concerned for the two Iraqis Mr Wood was kidnapped with and who remain in captivity.

"He's quite concerned for those other two people, people who were friends of Douglas Wood, people who had worked with Douglas Wood, people who used to invite him into their homes," he said.

"The mufti has dealt with the children of one of these people and he's really concerned for these children that they might become orphans."

I guess all the other innocent victims of these terrorists were gonna be released till they called their captors "arseholes". Yeah, that's the ticket.

Wood has inadvertently destroyed the self esteem of those he called "arseholes", now with the mental illness caused by the loss of self esteem, these poor camel bangers have such a low quality of life that it would be cruel to force them to go on living. Without a doubt, our only option is to round them up and euthanise them.

I just hope for Mr. Woods sake that they don't kill the other hostages and say it was because of his comments.

The article says the other two hostages were friends of his.

We all know that the terrorists will kill simply for fun, but the burden of guilt that sort of thing might place on Mr. Wood might be a pretty heavy load.

Seems to me Mr. Wood has the "burden of guilt" thing pretty well figured out.
