Lots of confusion on both sides of the aisle, so let me throw this out - Bush isn't actually a conservative at all, he's a progressive president. On the good side that accounts for an activist foreign policy that takes the fight to the enemy despite the screams of the establishment. On the bad side it prevents him from controlling government spending and the size of the government. It isn't "progressive" as defined by the liberals, but who decided that they should have the definitive word on that term? It is progressive inasmuch as it is dynamic change - many old ideas such as "he's a sonofabitch but he's our sonofabitch" are being reconsidered or trashed; such as Social Security, the defense of which has left the Dems in a profoundly conservative - and losing - position; such as new energy policies that utilize resources on which environmentalists have assumed a conservative - and losing - position; in short, Bush is not what the conservative side of his own party expected and certainly not what the now very confused majority of his opposition were counting on.

But as I said, it does have downsides, one of which is, IMHO, a position on immigration and border security that is less responsive than many conservatives - well, me - prefer. And it is up to us to communicate that to a fellow who owes us in large part his job. That does not mean he'll give us everything we want, but that's politics.

Yes, we are winning but there is so much ignorance out there.

I was in the store shopping today and overheard two young college age students talking about Arnold. One mentioned he thought Arnold got elected because he is a star and the other stars wanted him in to protect their interests. And, that the Kennedys and Maria were in the family.

The other mentioned "Is she running things?

I realized how hopeless to even mention the two parties democrat and republican.

Here is a FR thread on Mike Pence...

Mike Pence for President 2008 American Conservative Union ^ | 4/20/05 | Chris Denney

History has shown that conservatism works every time it is actually tried and that nothing else works at all.
As a guide, we have the principals of Ronald Wilson Reagan.
Yet, for ten years, Republicans have slowly moved away from limited government into a government-first, careerist, get-reelected at any cost mentality.
The 2008 Presidential election will decide if we maintain our conservative convictions or abandon them for perceived political gain.
Most of us realize that our party must nominate a Reagan conservative who can articulate the values and philosophy that made America what it is today.
We must draft, nominate, and elect both a true fiscal and social conservative.
In my mind there really is only one choice: Mike Pence of Indiana.

Irony? Sorry, I'm too busy doing this along with the WSJ to notice any irony.

Indeed. Lincoln is conservative company. Roosevelt isn't. Bush is one of the former and similar to Lincoln in many, many ways. The illustration is obvious except to those who can't see or don't want to.

I never cease to be amazed at the numbers of media types who still think the GOP has anything whatsoever to do with conservatism.

"Consider, for instance, Mr. Bush's failure to find his veto pen."
i think this has to be taken into context. why would you want to veto legislation that comes out of Congress controlled by your own party. Read somewhere that a lot of times the WH does lots of horse trading with Congress to get a version of whatever Bill acceptable for signing. Not saying i wouldnt like to see a veto here and there if it was necessary but it should be obvious that it would be less so in this situation

Lincoln is conservative company.

I'd be curious to know how you arrived at that conclusion. Lincoln was the progenitor of the decline and fall of Federalism in this country. How that would classify him as a conservative escapes me, maybe you can clarify.

Glad to, Steve:

President Lincoln conserved the United States of America, "one nation under God...".

President Lincoln conserved the United States of America...

My mistake. I thought when you said conservative, you meant conservative and not conservationist. Usually people use the term conservative in a context of political ideology. In your context, the word you were looking for is conservationist.

We're walloping the Democrats soundly and they're whistling past the graveyard.

Well, that is where they find a lot of their voters.

Six months later, listening to conservatives is as uplifting as reading William Styron's "Darkness Visible." Larry Kudlow bemoans "the dreariest political spring."...

The border issue matters and that's part of the problem. But we're also waking up to the fact that liberals really do hate us -- and our concern that the MSM was totally on their side is real. We'll win -- but the road is steep...

San Francisco, the citadel of liberalism, has the lowest proportion of people under 18 in the country (14.5%).

Good news.

All the same, the droopy state of the American right these days is unnatural.

Droopy state of the American right? Doesn't look the least bit droopy to me.

I sent this article to friends who needed cheering up. It is a hard road when the MSM lies, supports such drivel as that coming from the Durbin-Moore-Deaniancs. The Right-GOP will just have to move full steam ahead and forget any type of compromises with the DNC-LEFT. You simply cannot trust any of these Dems to keep their word Bush should recess appoint Bolton and Frist should keep bringing up judges one after another. If a steamroller is needed with the rules, so be it. And yes, the Right is concerned with illegal immigration as I blog constantly. But, when we win some, it is endemic on us , our side of the media, and the pols to announce those wins to the high heavens. Otherwise, those wins get lost in the constant drumbeat of leftist-secular-socialist lies day after day.
