It's not an urban legend, when they target you, you can expect that they'll be dumpster diving your garbage and attempting to trash your life in any way they can. They have corps of staff lawyers and plenty of suckers to pay them. You can expect nothing less from brainwashed zombies.

Yes. I personally know people this has happened to.
The most famous case is probably H. Keith Henson (google for more than you ever wanted to know), who currently has political asylum outside the US. In his case, he (a former high-level scientologist) published rather questionable and damning internal documents that exposed some of the ugly insides of that organization, and was charged and successfully convicted of something like copyright and trade secret infringement (for a "religion"?) that led to a long and very ugly saga.
The scientologists do not mess around. They will brazenly attack and intimidate anyone who crosses them, and at a minimum will attempt to bankrupt you via utterly pointless and contrived legal harrassment. Some European countries, like Germany, have banned the organization outright for being an unsavory and probably criminal enterprise.
