WASHINGTON A Senate Democratic leader is facing mounting criticism for recent comments he made comparing U.S. treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to inhumane tactics used in Nazi, Soviet and Cambodian concentration camps.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the assistant minority leader, subsequently said he regretted that his comments were misunderstood as criticism of U.S. troops. But Republicans have continued to call for a more forthright apology.
"He should certainly apologize," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." "There's no comparison whatsoever."
The day before, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., called on the Senate's second-ranking Democrat to apologize and withdraw his comments.

Don't count on it. The pubbies are master of the bungle. They still don't get what many of us sent them their to do: completely annihilate the liberal-wacko agenda.
And, again, I'm left waiting...waiting...waiting for something to happen. If there is a grand "strategery", I don't see it. I'm still waiting for someone (anyone) to call these creeps on their actions.
I hear Senators talk about "traditions of the Senate" and the "comity of the Senate". Well, "comity" is defined as "a state or atmosphere of harmony or mutual civility and respect". The 'pubbies need to FINALLY learn that the demoCRUDs forgot this idea a long (LONG!) time ago.
The plug on Durbin's political life should have already been pulled, but all it seems we are getting is a tug on his cord. Phone calls? Emails? Urging from colleagues?
The guy compared our brave fighting forces to Nazis and I have to make phone calls to derive a sense of outrage?
Why didn't another Senator walk right up to Durbin, in the hearing chamber, punch him square in the mouth and then demand an apology to the troops and his resignation from office.
Look, I don't think there is a more stark example of a public official who, in his official capacity as a Senator, in an official hearing, said something so deserving of universal condemnation.
Yet, what do we get out of Senate stalwart like John McCain? "I think he should apologize"? And, demoCREEPs are (essentially) defending what he said with excuses that "well, it's Bush' fault anyway" crap. WHAT?
[mattdono shakes head] I don't even know what to think anymore.
Show us the Memo. The FBI never said all of the stuff he read in the memo, one of his staffers embellished it. SHO US THE MEMO!!!!!!
What ever happened to Jim McDermott and Taliban Patty?
Stay the course on this folks. Durbin does not deserve to continue on in his senate seat after insulting our military and their loved ones with the remarks he made. We still need to flood his and everyone else's office with our demands that he resign!!!
THIS IS IMPORTANT. If he is allowed to get away with those vile hate filled remarks then this will be nothing and evryone will jump on the band wagon and our senate chamber will be filled with traitors. God bless our military.
This needs to be resolved and resolved now and the only way for this to happen is for him to resign or be thrown out. He is UNAmerican. Plain and simple. Any Amrican with love and pride in the United States would NEVER say anything even remotely like that. Can he disagree with the war? You bet!
Can he dare to Compare our military to NAZI's??? No!!! NEVER!!!!!!! Durbin made his choice on the side of the enemy plain and simple. now it is up to the American Public and tose in authority to throw this bum out of office before he gets more of our military KILLED!
BTTT!
What's the big deal? The Democrat Party is overtly anti-American, Marxist, and totalitarian. Durbin's an adequate spokesman for that bunch and what they stand for. The Democrats and their standpoint need more exposure, not less. I say give Durbin a megaphone.
It is a stunning display of misdirected outrage and distorted reality.
Durbin is endangering our troops in his evil attempts to undermine the war effort, and PGalt is blaming the GOP?!!
If I didn't read it with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it.....
btw, Coop........we've contacted our two Republican (sort of) Senators, and Durbin, and will continue to pound them today and beyond.
Thanks for keeping the emphasis WHERE IT BELONGS.
Good for you, Ohio. I imagine you've taken more action than PGalt ever will. I stumbled across one of his/her posts on another thread - same stuff, although at least there PGalt was blaming both parties (the other 99 senators). No criticism of the traitor, mind you, just the Senate in general.
> I think Durbin is just piling insult on top of injury here with his statement "I am sorry what I said was misunderstood".
This won't go away. How many times did Trent Lott apologize and grovel before the leadership finally realized that a mildly offensive racial remark intended as a (lame) joke is unacceptable in this day and age.
Durbin has gone way, way beyond Trent Lott's misdemeanor. Durbin has crossed the line of felony, treason, giving aid and comfort to the enemy... The pressure will continue to mount.
Some Dems "disavow" his remarks, "distance themselves" from Durbin. That is a beginning. When will the feckless Harry Reid have something to say? When will we hear calls for Durbin's censure?
Don't worry. Dan Rather's on the case.
I tell you, Coop, you can't tell these guys from the trolls. They behave in exactly the same way....
Someone ought to start a Dump Durbin fund now while the iron is hot.
Durbin, like the "detainees" at Gitmo, laughs at heat.
Here, here!
It's hard to reach the thermostat to turn up the heat when you don't have a spine......
Republicans worse? Equally bad?
And why did you voice your anger at Republicans, and have yet to voice your anger at Durbin?
You too. What about Durbin?
If you are waiting for Durbin to stand up, act like a man and appologize you won't live long enough. Last time I checked the 'Pubbies were in charge of the Senate and it's high time that Frist, my Senator, called these treasonous weasles to the carpet on this crap.
In issue after issue, the Dems are walking all over the 'Pubbies. The Republicans simply do not know how to lead. Period.
