Information from earlier posters with credible cites of Dutch Law. If I re-locate them I'll pass them along. I believe the absolute maximum for murder was 20 years...and most thought 12 - 14 years, if Joran was found to be guilty.

Murder under Dutch law is punishable by a max sentence of 20 yrs. Under extreme circumstances, a life sentence is possible...you would need to show prior convictions, multiple murders, etc.

The Dutch believe that people can be rehabilitated. In my research, it looks like the typical sentence is about 12-15 yrs. In addition, about 1/4-1/3 of the sentence gets cut for good behavior.

The extreme circumstances do not exist in this case...trust me, there is a recent case of a guy who killed his 4 yr old daughter and cut her up into little pieces, and he got 12 yrs....

Oh, btw, attempted murder gets you 2-4...
