The media and the Leftists have had a field day with the Downing Street memos that they claim imply that the Bush administration lied about the intelligence on WMD in order to justify the attack on Iraq. Despite the fact that none of the memos actually say that, none of them quote any officials or any documents, and that the text of the memos show that the British government worried about the deployment of WMD by Saddam against Coalition troops, Kuwait and/or Israel, the meme continues to survive.
Until tonight, however, no one questioned the authenticity of the documents provided by the Times of London. That has now changed, as Times reporter Michael Smith admitted that the memos he used are not originals, but retyped copies (via LGF and CQ reader Sapper):
The eight memos — all labeled "secret" or "confidential" — were first obtained by British reporter Michael Smith, who has written about them in The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. Smith told AP he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.
The AP obtained copies of six of the memos (the other two have circulated widely). A senior British official who reviewed the copies said their content appeared authentic. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secret nature of the material.
They have realized it is written copies of photocopies of the orginial copy.....and it has them gobsmacked.
He can say anything he wants.
Unless he can prove it, there's nothing to discuss.

As I said in another thread, I'm happy to rely on the veracity of the British Government in this case (notwithstanding my usual views on Tony Blair's honesty!) If the memos are fabricated, I can think of no reason at all why he won't be broadcasting his outrage at the fact and demanding resignations at the Sunday Times for printing them.
We sure could use a Republican house leader with a SPINE HELLO!!!!! REPUBLICAN SENATORS!!!!! HELLOOOOOOOO!!!!! ANYONE OUT THERE WITH A SPINE?????????
These memos repeatedly make clear that a small collection of extreme left groups -- abortion groups, race organizations, labor unions and leftist groups specifically focused on judges -- are driving the Democrats' agenda and decisions. These groups tell Senate Democrats whom to attack and vote down, when to hold hearings on which nominee, how many hearings to hold and rules ofr allowing floor votes. The memos even indicate that the groups persuaded Democrats to delay nominations in order to affect pending cases.

I love it. The liberal whack jobs will never give up trying, will they? No reporter would destroy the original memos, so I think the fact that these are copies says everything you need to know about the truth.
This is great! Are there any more articles that state that the memos are copies? Also, I can't find the thread at the DUmpster where they're discussing this??

Agree with you here regarding your sentiment - As will 70% of the general public! - But even irregardless of that, these memo's say NOTHING to begin with! - They say nothing other than showing GWB was taking his job seriously to protect the American public after Sept 11th -
They show he was looking for all threats and was going to deal with them!! -- not sit back and watch a gathering threat grow until it was too late.
Even within these "fake" or "copied" memo's (LMAO) - Jack Straw says as much - He says because of Sept 11th the World has basically changed and we (America) looks to be moving now to remove the threat of Saddam. This is exactly right!
Democrats and the MSM just hate that they were on the wrong side of history. Freedom and self-worth are spreading in the Middle East. These are good things and in history Democrats will be shown to have been against the actions that brought this about. (and made the World safer).
What? They are (I suppose I should put 'allegedly') British government documents given to a British journalist, printed in a British newspaper and concerning the workings of the British Government in taking a decison about whether Britain should commit British troops to war.
We'll probably hear crickets chirping instead of the scathing response needed from our Republican leaders. We've had "Turban Durbin" and this in one week. We need to stick it to the Libs.
Hmm, I wonder who the "source" is. Mary Mapes? Michael Moore? Damn Blather? 60 Minutes? Dateline NBC? Primetime Live? All proven liars and past users of the "fake but accurate" line.
