Did Lucy Ramirez Find The Downing Street Memos?(Fake, but accurate memos??)
captainsquartersblog.com ^ | 6/19/05 | Captains Quarters

The media and the Leftists have had a field day with the Downing Street memos that they claim imply that the Bush administration lied about the intelligence on WMD in order to justify the attack on Iraq. Despite the fact that none of the memos actually say that, none of them quote any officials or any documents, and that the text of the memos show that the British government worried about the deployment of WMD by Saddam against Coalition troops, Kuwait and/or Israel, the meme continues to survive.

Until tonight, however, no one questioned the authenticity of the documents provided by the Times of London. That has now changed, as Times reporter Michael Smith admitted that the memos he used are not originals, but retyped copies (via LGF and CQ reader Sapper):

The eight memos — all labeled "secret" or "confidential" — were first obtained by British reporter Michael Smith, who has written about them in The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times. Smith told AP he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.

The AP obtained copies of six of the memos (the other two have circulated widely). A senior British official who reviewed the copies said their content appeared authentic. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secret nature of the material.

Re-typed memoes from anonymous sources.

Well, that does it for me.

I suppose next we'll have reporters/democrats waving a blank piece of paper and talking about what shocking information "could" be on it. After all, it's all about the seriousness of the charge -- so who needs authentication?

If a newspaper claimed to have documents showing that, say, John Kerry had fabricated details of his service in Vietnam, and Kerry made no comment whatsoever, would you not consider that fairly telling?

No. It's not possible for anyone to answer every charge from every source made against them in politics. I wouldn't bother to use the article in debate if I knew the reporter had retyped second hand information he claimed was in documents he admitted he destroyed. I would have to assume the reporter has edited the documents, or even made them up. There's been no shortage of documents I'd LIKE to use in debate in the Iraq war, on WMD, for example- but I haven't used them because of the lack of provenance.

The DS Memo is too much like the earlier claims of the mythical CIA insider T J Wilkinson which were put out by Capitol Hill Blue against the Bush Administration and which were fed internationally to Japan Today to give the article respectability and traction. And CHB claimed to have known the source for decades as a 'conservative.'

As a sidenote, over here every source the press has tried to use against the war effort has been touted as conservative- first they claimed that T J Wilkinson was, then they claimed Ambassador Joseph Wilson was, then Richard Clarke, then Wesley Clarke, and an assortment of anonymous and not so anonymous CIA agents, and so on. None have proven to be so, and many proved to be advisors to the Kerry camp or associated with leftist groups, but it's still apparently SOP.

Don't forget the information we used against Kerry came from Kerry himself or his own campaign website. That V for valor thing on his silver star for example... his claims to have been sent to Cambodia at Christmastime by a man who wasn't even president yet, the belated 'autopen documents' with a signature on them by a Secretary of the Navy who didn't actually sign them, his home movies war 'reenactments,' his appearance before Fullbright's committee in the 70s, his trips to France to meet with the Vietnamese, his demands that Bush produce documents when Kerry wouldn't even sign a 180 to produce his own. We didn't need to make up documents, edit them, or rephrase them to take Kerry down. He was his own worst enemy.

Just telling it like I see it. I said that the first Downing Street memos weren't fakes when people on here were saying they were and was proved correct.

Since I missed it, which posting proved you correct? A lack of an answer to the question of 'have you beaten your wife lately?' and that comment by Blair a few posts up about the date on the alleged memo certainly doesn't prove anything. The burden of proof is always on the accuser and whether real or fake, a memo would bear a date.

I smell something very bad. It will be funny to see how long Conyers and his moonbat lynch mob stick to support these documents before they try to minimize damage control.

this has the potnetial to cause HUGE damage to the LW RATS.

But why do you suppose the reporter went to the trouble of re-typing them on a typewriter, not on computer? And why did he then go to the trouble of obtaining a stamp and stamping them "Confidential" and "Top Secret"?

If true, I was unaware of this. Obviously, if the reporter attempts to portray a reyped document as an original, that would be very different.

Michael Smith Strikes Again

Captain's Quarters has the story that the authenticity of the "Downing Street Memos" is being questioned.

Seems that reporter Michael Smith can't authenticate the originals; in fact, it looks like he may have faked the memos.

HEY ! A reporter hired by Mary Mapes as a CBS assistant producer, "Michael Smith," was the guy that BummerDietz fingered as the true culprit of MemoGate. Can there be two "Michael Smiths" who are leftish military stringers?

Rawstory indicates that Michael Smith admits that he "destroyed the original copies" before September 17, 2004. So, this timeline would be that Smith is destroying memos, around September 2004....The faked Killian memos appear to have been forged in mid-August, 2004, and a story was told by Burkett that he had "destroyed the originals."

Now we have Michael Smith (again, same Mapes team guy?) admitting that he was typing up old memo copies the same 30-day period?

Is that the same Michael Smith - the one emailed Mapes in Memogate, trying to arrange a publishing advance/bribe for Burkett, asking if it could be arranged: "What if there was a person who might have some information that could possibly change the momentum of an election?"

One or more Michael Smiths were very busy in August and September 2004 with not one, but TWO SETS of faked memos that were highly critical of George Bush.....

I suspect the language of the "retyped" memo was substantially changed by this "reporter" in order to "protect then source" and to "steer the story" to the direction he wanted.

Kerry might not have taken them to the Senate floor, but he sure made a lot of noise about them - publicly saying Bush should be impeached.

As to where Lucy is: Kerry is probably hiding her in one of his several mansions. She is probably his secret paramour! Terazza will never know, she is still drunk somewhere in another house. But, Michael Moore probably wrote the memos - sounds like his "style" - all lies. Then he gave them to Lucy who passed them to a willing British Bush bashing journalist. Oh, I love the conspiracy theory. I learned how to do it from Hillary's many claims.

But its being "retyped" does not of itself prove that it is "fake," unless of course the claim is made that it is an original.

IMHO, it smells to high heaven.

If they are the same Michael Smith, that would be a really nice way to wrap up this bs.

the lady of the house on a job Friday was just ecstatic about these memos.

. . . She just took it for granted that I would agree with her. Isn't such aggressive infliction of one's own views rude?

  1. The customer is always right.
  2. When the customer is wrong, refer to rule #1.
I think you did right by not discussing it. She was in her own house, and she was excited. You cut her some slack, as it was in your interest to do.

But here on FR, she's a flaming idiot who couldn't find the floor with her hands and knees if you knocked her down! (Feel better now?)

Excellent summary about Moi Kerri and these memos"

"When I started reading this thread, my first thought, was that perhaps this was why Kerry never did take the "memo to the Senate floor", like he promised to do weeks ago...

I used to think that too but it is in the dictionary and it doesn't necessarily say that it is incorrect:

That was another BSing lie that Free Republic Freepers ripped to shreds with the truth. Where is the fat old liar, Doug? Is he the Michael Smith quoted in this sham. Did Doug come with this latest lying bs?
