Oops...correction on my last comment... "Niall Ferguson is Laurence H Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University." The Telegraph is a conservative leaning British publication, though.

I liken it to wanting to return to one's childhood.
Childhood brings (perceived) security, no work, no responsibility. Parents meet our needs and do our thinking for us.
Adulthood means greater freedom but also greater responsibility and greater potential for failure. Some people can't handle that so they prefer being perpetual children even if they acknowledge the trade-off of lost freedom.
Today's Russia resembles a typical 12-year-old's worldview.
