Regarding the "Stalin as a great leader" poll, our time with our host family in Moscow seemed to reveal no love for the Communist regime. I specifically asked our host the question of who is most revered by himself and, in general, the Russian people.
His reply? He said he didn't think the response would be universal, but in his mind, General Zhukov. He said military leaders, even under the communist regime, are not tagged with the Communist brush. Rather, they are thought of as patriotic leaders. Also, the perceived corruption is less of their military than their politicians (nothin' new there, or here). And of course, in Zhukov's case, he was protecting Mother Russia from the invading German hordes.
If the poll is accurate by some slim chance, I would take the "Stalin vote" to mean perhaps ABP, "anybody but Putin."
==Sejna, see Papacea, Lunev, ditto, Kalugin, ditto...Toss me a defector who isn't cashing in on his "fame" and one that wasn't a criminal as well and I'll give the guy his do. The guys you reference are no better than Sammy The Bull.
I can't speak for Lunev or Kalugin, but neither Golitysn or Sejna "cashed in" on "fame"...they were both persecuted/screwed-over by the CIA and the Washington elite.
