OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mayor Jerry Brown, who was twice elected California governor and ran for president three times, ended one of the longest bachelor streaks in American politics Saturday, marrying longtime girlfriend Anne Gust.

It was the first marriage for Gust, 47, a former Gap executive, as well as for Brown, 67, who plans to run for state attorney general next year.

"How fortunate you are to have found each other," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who officiated at the ceremony. "What a treasure it is to have a companion for life."

The couple, who have known each other for 15 years, were married in Oakland's artfully restored Rotunda Building, a suitable site with its wedding cake-like interior of galleries stacked on gleaming white columns.

Guests included former Gov. Gray Davis and Willie Brown, a former speaker of the state Assembly and former San Francisco mayor who is not related to the groom. Former state Treasurer Kathleen Brown, Jerry Brown's sister, was also present.

The couple were serenaded by Gregorian and Cistercian chants, a nod to Jerry Brown's days as a Jesuit scholar. Brown, who said the elements of the ceremony dated back at least 500 years, said, "To have real change, you have to be grounded in tradition."

Brown, whose romantic life last made headlines in the 1970s when he dated singer Linda Ronstadt, proposed to Gust on her birthday in March after cooking her dinner in the loft they share in downtown Oakland.

A Catholic ceremony was planned later Saturday in St. Agnes' Church in San Francisco, the same church where Brown's parents, former Gov. Pat Brown and his wife, Bernice, were married.

This lady may well be Browns companion for life, but I am pretty sure he won't be hers. When he is in diapers, she will have a good 20 years left.

It has to be for some other reason other than marriage just like the deal with Ronstat, she is a lezzie and he's queer as a $3 bill.

Like a friend of mine that was a State Cop that had to guard his house on Laural Canyon said, the bushes only hide so much and he and his guests playing leapfrog on the lawn and swallow the leader was nothing short of sickining.

Congratulations to Jerry Brown and his new bride.

After the way he took on Clinton and told America exactly what the Clintons were all about, and the way Slick trashed him in the '92 primaries, I got to have a warm spot for Jerry Brown.

Godspeed and good luck.

Being such a good Catholic fellow, I'm sure it was getting harder and harder for them to remain chaste, so they "rushed" the wedding instead of waiting another 15 years--LOL!

Linda Ronstand?

Is the question mark there because you have never heard of her, or because you didn't know that Jerry and Linda used to be an "item"?
