1,000 US troops carrying out combat operations in Al-Anbar, Iraqi police arrest 25 in overnight sweep in Kut.
BAGHDAD - US forces have launched an operation in Iraq's northwestern Al-Anbar province, a stronghold of insurgents, the military said in a statement on Friday.
Approximately 1,000 troops are carrying out combat operations there as part of Operation Spear which the US said is aimed at "rooting out insurgents and foreign fighters and disrupting insurgent support systems in and around Karabilah."
On June 11, US air strikes against a concentration of insurgents in the town killed around 40.
Meanwhile, twenty-five suspects were arrested overnight during a six-hour search operation in Kut, south of Baghdad, Iraqi police said on Friday.
"Among them was the head of a terrorist group, Abu Umar al-Jishashi, who was wanted by police," a police source said.
The arrests were made during Operation Lightning, a large-scale joint offensive by Iraqi and US troops aimed at hunting down insurgents in Baghdad and surrounding areas and halting a spate of car bomb attacks.
Iraqi authorities say they have now made more than 1,000 arrests in connection with the operation.

I remeber you had a question about where the operation was ongoing. According to this source, it mentions the operation is ongoing around Karabilah. I could not locate it on Map Quest with the search engine but found out it is near the border of Syria. By the way, do you have any idea about Hulla, where Operation White Shield is taking place? I could not find it on Map Quest as well.
Glad to see more US air strikes. No need to let all those nice bombs get dusty.
In operations of Kut as mentioned in the article, Abu Umar al-Jishashi, who was wanted by police was captured.
Me too, but I doubt the Army will make the mistake of releasing any video that they may have. Remember before Fallujah fell we saw the video of a bomb being dropped onto a bunch of terrorists flushed out into the road? That gave me SUCH a feeling of satisfaction - ordinance right on target! But nowdays showing something like that would give Durbin and the other liberals more cause to squeal that were not fighting a more "sensitive" war. The way things are going we could put the terrorists at Gitmo up at the Waldorf Astoria and the libs would STILL complain theyre being mistreated!! libs - I hate them all.
Its HILLA.
YYYYeeeessss!!!! Go gettim'!
That makes sense. Thanks.
