As much as anything else, this would tend to confirm that their new Type 094 SSBN design is coming along as well.

These new Chinese SSBNs will carry 16 of the JL-2 SLBMs which have a maximum range of 8,000kms. This new missile, coupled with the Type 094 SSBN, will allow the Chinese to target portions of the United States for the first time from operating areas located near the Chinese coast.

I think that Chinese nuke subs are more of American problem than Japanese. JL-2 is not against Japan, but against U.S.

But their missile can. Soviet boomer had never have to leave Sea of Okhotsk nor Arctic Sea. All they have to do is to hide undetected in Western Pacific and launch missiles when the time comes.
