One would expect an impalement to be slightly more bloody than in that photo, right? From what I understand, the object that enters the body (such as a fence post or a knife) serves as a stopper for any major bleeding. When the object is removed, it's like removing the stopper and thus the danger of a lot of blood loss in a short time. That's why you'll see people brought into emergency rooms with knives still stuck in them, or in this case with fence posts still stuck in them. At least the offending object can be removed in a setting more suitable for handling a bleeding emergency.

I would presume that after being impaled and before that photo was taken he would try to wiggle a little, attempting to unimpale himself - and that would provide the movement around the wound.

There is a rather nasty pict of a drug suspect on snopes.com that did the same thing but his head was cleanly ripped from his body. Head stuck perfectly on the fence like it was set there. NOT FOR THE QUEEZY.

I saw that photo, corn rows and all!
He jumped off a freeway embankment and was impaled thru the neck.
Perfect head on a pike photo!

I dunno - he looks like he's hung up on a section of 3 posts there, so IMHO he wasn't going to be moving around enough to cause himself any great harm - plus if the cops were chasing him it means they were right there after this happened, and they may have told him to stay as still as possible.
All in all, Mr. Carlson is one pretty lucky SOB. Lots of things had to work out just right for him to not die.

Yeah that sad part or not so sad .... is that their would be no doubt enough blood and oxygen in his brain for him to have seen his body lying on the ground.

The whole thing is "iron"-ic....

A doctor I know told me about a guy who was transported to the hospital emergency room attached to a door (knob). The firefighters who "rescued" him just took the door off and brought it with him. I called him a liar but his nurses swore he was telling the truth.

Carrllson was arrested on assault early Thursday morning on charges for an incident in May of 2005. Police say he stabbed another person in the back with some gardening shears.
